Iran's foreign minister says no renegotiating nuclear deal

Hamid Baeidinejad said that if Washington withdraws from the agreement as President Donald Trump has said he would, Tehran could resume its uranium enrichment and "redefine our cooperation with the agency and some other activities that are under consideration".

He said on January 12 that he wanted America's European allies to use the 120-day period before sanctions relief again came up to agree on tougher measures and new conditions; otherwise Washington would pull out of the deal.

"On 11 occasions since, the United Nations nuclear watchdog has confirmed that Iran has implemented all of its obligations", Zarif, who studied in the U.S., says in American-accented English.

Also on Wednesday, China urged all sides to stick to the landmark deal that the USA and Israel have threatened to kill.

"We will neither outsource our security nor will we renegotiate or add onto a deal we have already implemented in good faith, " Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on YouTube.

"If the USA continues to violate the agreement, or if it withdraws altogether, we will exercise our right to respond in a manner of our choosing". "In contrast, the USA has consistently violated the agreement, especially by bullying others from doing business with Iran".

While directly criticizing the US and Europe, Zarif did appear to leave some wiggle room for possible negotiations, however.

"In the previous year or so, we've been told that President Trump is unhappy with the deal, and it now appears that the response from some Europeans has been to offer the United States more concessions, from our pocket", said Iran's top diplomat.

"We think the biggest mistake that was made was under the Obama administration by ever entering the deal that you referenced in the first place", Sanders told reporters.

Zarif was responding to Britain, France and Germany who said on Sunday that the nuclear agreement left out some "important elements".

There is a chance Trump might choose to keep the United States in the global pact under which Iran agreed to curb its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief, in part because of "alliance maintenance" with France and to save face for French President Emmanuel Macron, who met Trump last week and urged him to stay in, the source said.

Until recent weeks, Iranian officials had suggested the country could stand by its commitments under the deal - which curbed uranium enrichment in return for sanctions relief - in the face of a USA withdrawal, as long as other signatories that include France, the U.K., Germany, Russia and China remain supportive.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday reiterated his commitment to the accord but admitted that it needed strengthening.

Technically, Trump must decide by May 12 whether to renew "waivers" suspending some of the USA sanctions on Iran.

The ambassador denied Iran would restart any nuclear weapons production. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called into question the legitimacy of the U.S. and Israel making moves to have the deal scrapped after it gained the consensus of five world powers in 2015 in what was widely regarded at the time as a significant diplomatic victory in the worldwide community.

A decision by Trump to end United States sanctions relief would all but sink the agreement and could trigger a backlash by Iran, which could resume its nuclear arms programme or "punish" USA allies in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon, diplomats said.

"Even if countries allied with the United States, especially the Europeans, seek to revise the nuclear agreement... one of our options will be withdrawing from the accord", Velayati added.
