Israel has accused Mr Abbas of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial after the Palestinian leader suggested in a speech that historical persecution of European Jews had been caused by their conduct. "Even basic acquaintance with European history would inform Abbas about the escalation of anti-Semitism throughout Europe during the second half of the 19th century and the start of the 20th, and that this was in effect the prime context for the murder of Jews during the Holocaust", said the statement. They were massacred because Jews were bankers, charged usury, "and so on", Mahmoud Abbas said.

"His comments were out of keeping with the tone of the Council as a whole", she added, "and of my discussions with other delegates, and I hope President Abbas will immediately apologise for them, so that the message to come out of this important Council meeting can remain positive and progressive, and focused on reestablishing peaceful and constructive dialogue".

The German-Palestinian Society, or DPG, in a statement Tuesday said it "dissociates itself clearly and unequivocally" from the remarks by Abbas. "There can be no more excuses or obfuscations for such blasphemous lies".

The Shadow Foreign Secretary slammed the Netanyahu-led government's actions, including "the expansion of illegal settlements, the crippling blockade against Gaza, the brutal and lethal suppression of protests on the Gaza border, and the unlawful detention and ill-treatment of Palestinian children". There can be no peace with holocaust denying anti-Semites.

In an editorial on Thursday entitled: "Let Abbas's Vile Words Be His Last as Palestinian Leader", the paper charged that the Palestinian leader had fed "reprehensible antisemitic myths and conspiracy theories. It does, however, elevate hatred to a new level".

Calling Donald Trump's cut of aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) "cruel and spiteful", Thornberry vowed that a "Labour government would host an worldwide funding conference to address the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people". Liberal Jewish groups like J Street and American Friends of Peace Now said his remarks were incendiary and offensive.

"Such rhetoric will only play into the hands of those who do not want a two-state solution, which President Abbas has repeatedly advocated".

In Abbas' doctoral dissertation, he questioned whether six million Jews died in the Holocaust, saying the number was likely much lower.
