Iowa Passes 6-Week-Abortion Ban

The state of Iowa now has the strictest abortion law in the nation.

A similar court challenge is under way in Kentucky, which in April enacted a ban on a common abortion procedure from the 11th week of pregnancy.

"We thank Iowa for recognizing that every life is a gift and that personhood has inherent dignity from the moment of conception", Mancini added.

The bill, officially called File 359 but commonly known as "the heartbeat bill", dictates that a woman is prohibited to have an abortion after a heartbeat is detected in her womb, usually six weeks after pregnancy.

Citing her faith, presumably Christianity, State Governor Kim Reynolds said the bill was "about life" and it was "immoral to stop an innocent beating heart".

Kim Reynolds (R) on Friday afternoon signed into law the Fetal Heartbeat Bill, which prohibits doctors from performing an abortion after the detection of the baby's heartbeat.

They said they were pleased the Legislature took action to "stop any trafficking in fetal body parts" and said they support "the life-affirming intent of the provision to stop abortions after a heartbeat can be detected".

"We will challenge this law with absolutely everything we have on behalf of our patients, on behalf of your rights, because Iowa will not go back".

While fetal heartbeat bills have been made law in recent years in other states throughout the US, historically federal courts have struck them down.

Backers of the so-called "heartbeat" bill - which didn't get a single Democratic vote in the Legislature during final passage - expressed hope it could challenge Roe vs. Wade, the landmark 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that established women have a right to terminate pregnancies until a fetus is viable.

The debate over abortion rights continues to rage across the country, especially in areas where conservatives are in power.

Reynolds' signature came shortly after state Planned Parenthood affiliates and the left-wing American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) threatened a lawsuit to block the law's enforcement, CBS News reports. "I'm not going to back down from who I am or what I believe in".

Reproductive health advocates say anti-choice lawmakers have been emboldened by the Trump administration, since President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have been open about their desire to overturn Roe v. Wade. Instead, we will protect the fundamental right of Iowa women to control their bodies and their lives. "I've made that very clear".
