Trump Ends Temporary Amnesty for 50K Honduran Nationals

  • The Trump administration is ending special protections for 57,000 Honduran immigrants

It did the same in November for about 46,000 Haitians.

While Honduras is no longer recovering from Hurricane Mitch, which forced 57,000 people to flee to the USA, the country is one of the world's most violent, with gang warfare an ongoing occurrence and massive deadly political unrest following the last presidential election.

Honduras is a significant source of illegal immigration to the United States, and numerous families who joined the migrant caravan through Mexico that captured the attention of President Trump last month said they fled their country in fear for their lives. In her statement, Secretary Nielsen said that conditions in that country had notably improved and there's been a substantial post-hurricane recovery. "Thus, as required under the applicable statute, the current TPS designation must be terminated". In recent months the Department of Homeland Security has also ended protected status for El Salvador, Nicaragua, Haiti, Sudan and Nepal.

DHS typically terminates TPS for a country with an effective date in the future so people can get their affairs in order.

"One thing I can tell you is I am not going to Honduras", she said, noting that numerous asylum-seeking migrants in a caravan that recently reached the U.S. -Mexico border are from Honduras. Almost one-fourth of Honduran TPS beneficiaries were 15 years old or younger when they first arrived in the United States, according to a study from the Center for Migration Studies. In response to a caravan of several hundred asylum-seekers coming to the U.S., Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen publicly urged them to stay in Mexico, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions vowed to criminally prosecute those he could. "It unmasked the reality of the country ― our institutions are broken and the president, because of the elections, has no legitimacy".

Marlon Tabora, the Honduras ambassador to the United States, said the conditions did not exist in the Central American country to deal with the repatriation of tens of thousands of people. A lot of them will nearly certainly end up staying in the US legally.

In an interview with National Public Radio, Honduran immigrant Orlando Lopez said: "I'm afraid to return". Now fully blind, he fears returning to Honduras, where his father was shot about 8 years ago. The administration can only extend a TPS designation for 6 to 18 months at a time, meaning that people granted this status often live their lives on hold. These children are all US citizens.

The Honduran government was pressuring the White House to keep TPS for Honduran immigrants.

In January, the Trump administration ended TPS classification for some 200,000 Salvadorans, which had allowed to live and work in the United States since 2001.

A DHS spokesperson told the Washington Examiner that Sec. She said that DHS will work with the Department of State and the Honduran government to facilitate the transition and in addition the department will participate in outreach activities "to ensure that affected populations have a full and accurate understanding of their rights and obligations". Duke denied those reports.
