A "drastic" change in Armenia foreign policy would only hurt the country, he said.

Addressing the parliament before the vote, Pashinian pledged to implement "very serious reforms" that would democratize Armenia, strengthen the rule of law and radically improve the domestic business environmental.

Bagdasaryan also accused Pashinyan of fomenting "widespread hatred" in the country with his revolutionary rhetoric. The opposition accuses Sargsyan, who was twice elected president, of poor governance and deterioration of economic situation in the country.

Armenia's parliament has elected opposition lawmaker Nikol Pashinian as the country's new prime minister.

But throughout Armenia's wave of protests, Moscow has remained publicly neutral, and Pashinyan has consistently said he viewed Moscow as a vital ally.

Pashinyan had his first meeting as Prime Minister with Armenian President Armen Sarkissian on May 8 in the President's Office.

Lawmakers elected Pashinyan by a 59-42 vote after the leader of the ruling Republican Party, Vahram Baghdasarian, announced his party would give Pashinyan 11 votes - which helped put him over the top.

After it blocked his election last week, the party said on Tuesday it had chose to get behind him for the sake of unity and the good of the nation.

The Republican Party, which has a majority of the seats in the chamber, said last week that it would support any candidate nominated by a third of the deputies and that it would not put forth its own candidate. Rock musicians took to a central stage, where they played to jubilant crowds of mostly young people waving the tricolor Armenian flag and photos of Pashinyan.

Pashinyan, the MP who spearheaded massive demonstrations throughout the country for about two weeks, failed to be elected by a 56-45 vote in the first round of voting.

Yet faced with weeks of mass protests, Sargsyan left the premiership on April 23, six days after his election.

Pashinian further reaffirmed his plans to push for fresh parliamentary elections.
