"While these allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office's work at this critical time", he said.

Schneiderman says he'll resign at the close of business Tuesday.

Before becoming Solicitor General appointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Underwood served as Counsel and as Chief Assistant to the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of NY, and from 1998-2001 was the Acting Solicitor General and Principal Deputy Solicitor General of the U.S. She has argued 20 cases in the U.S. Supreme Court. Schneiderman, a Democrat, announced mere hours after the report was published that he will resign on Tuesday.

To add insult to injury, the president's son Donald Trump Jr. tweeted the article.

Schneiderman's stunning and swift collapse, coming just hours after the New Yorker published its story, is a blow to the national Democratic party following the December resignation of Minnesota Senator Al Franken amid allegations of groping. They also described him as a vicious drinker and a power-mad official who once allegedly said to one former partner, memorably, "I am the law".

An earlier investigation of Manhattan District Attorney, Cyrus Vance over his handling of a sexual assault allegation against Weinstein highlights the sea change facing Schneiderman.

Four women who have had romantic relationships with New York's attorney general have accused him of physically abusing them.

Both women alleged that the incidents often occurred after Schneiderman had been drinking.

Manning Barish posted on Facebook on Monday, "I could not remain silent and encourage other women to be courageous for me".

Manning Barish, an activist and writer, replied on Twitter to a message from actress Rose McGowman, who has accused Weinstein of rape, "Because you you, my sister, @rosemcgowan because of your bravery to speak truth to power and face your perpetrator, you have given so many women the strength to use their own voices".

Lander praised the #MeToo movement for creating a space where women who have similarly suffered can come forward, and where powerful figures are held accountable for their actions. I have not assaulted anyone.

"It would be an enormous mistake for the hypocrites in the Trump White House to take any joy in Schneiderman's fall here, because the work goes on", Kauffmann said.

"I've known Eric for almost 35 years as a husband, father and friend", she said. "These allegations are completely inconsistent with the man I know, who has always been someone of the highest character, outstanding values and a loving father".

Schneiderman, a Democrat from the West Side of Manhattan, had won a $25 million settlement against Trump University and had challenged the new Republican president on a number of issues.

CoinDesk asked the Attorney General's Office if the crypto exchange inquiry would continue in light of Schneiderman's exit. They could not be immediately reached for comment on whether they would cooperate with such an investigation.

Two other women who chose to remain anonymous told similar tales.

The article was co-written by Ronan Farrow, who last month shared the Pulitzer Prize for public service with The New York Times for reporting on the Harvey Weinstein scandal and sexual harassment.

Schneiderman's ex-wife Jennifer Cunningham said she "found it impossible" to believe the accusations.
