Qualcomm's senior wearables director Pankaj Kedia confirmed to Wareable that Qualcomm is going to launch a new processor for wearable devices alongside a flagship device in the fall this year.
Speaking to Wareable, Google and Qualcomm revealed that chipsets are coming in the fall with a new "lead smartwatch".
The Snapdragon 400 that powered the first Wear devices were originally phones chips with slight customizations. The new chip is created to be smaller (as you would expect considering the 2100 used a 28nm build process) resulting in smaller smartwatches and provide a full fitness experience, all while making the battery last longer.
In the past couple of years, there have been a large number of brands that have come on board the Android Wear wagon, most of these are the same watch inside but different design.
Qualcomm begun work on the new chips as soon as the 2100 was out the door, which means Qualcomm and Google have had a couple of years to see how the wearables market is shaking out.
Qualcomm is shipping samples of its third-generation wearable chip - the first to be built from the "ground up", it claims.
There will be a focus on watches both looking good and having smartwatch functionality.
Kedia refers to the new chips as "dedicated" to use cases, and says we can expect multiple variations. We've heard about a hybrid LG watch with mechanical hands and a touchscreen, which could be exactly what is being hinted at here. While Kedia stopped short of providing specifics, such as die size and actual battery life, he was very forthcoming on several key features.
Among other features, Kedia said that the new platform will bring the "best fitness and watch experience" and extend the existing battery life.
Tell me, would you be interested in a smartwatch if it looked more like a normal watch?
Finally, another perk of a new low-power architecture will be the capacity to do more with health and fitness, as smartwatches will be able to power more sensors like heart rate for longer periods of time.
