Thousands evacuate as Storm Alberto powers toward Florida

  • A Flood Watch continues for all of South Florida through 8 pm Sunday evening and the National Weather Service could extend it into Monday

Subtropical storms have cooler centers than tropical storms, but they can eventually develop into tropical storms and then into hurricanes.

Tropical Storm Warnings continue for almost the entire Gulf Coast of Florida, and a Storm Surge Watch continues for coastal regions from the Nature Coast to Pensacola. "With deep convection closer to the center and a slightly smaller radius of maximum winds, it appears that Alberto is beginning its transition to a tropical cyclone", the National Hurricane stated in their Sunday morning update.

In the tropics, the story has been Subtropical Storm Alberto, which makes landfall later today across the Panhandle of Florida.

Last week, another pulse of tropical moisture that didn't rise to the level of a storm soaked the South.

The governors of Florida, Alabama and MS declared states of emergency Saturday.

The National Weather Service says the ground is already saturated from a week of heavy rain and the 5 inches of rain possible through Tuesday could both cause creeks and rivers to flood and mudslides.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for an area stretching from MS to North Carolina that is home to millions of people. Governor Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency in all 67 counties.

On Sunday morning, the storm was located about 240 kilometres northwest of the Dry Tortugas, which is nearly 113 kilometres west of Key West, Florida, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The weekend downpours were brought on by the season's first named storm, Subtropical Storm Alberto, which was gaining momentum and strength as it moved through the eastern Gulf Sunday morning. The tropical storm watch along the north-central Gulf Coast has been discontinued. It had maxium sustained winds of 65 miles per hour early Monday and can create risky waves for people not in its path.

Subtropical Storm Alberto has gained an early jump on the 2018 hurricane season, heading toward expected landfall sometime Monday on the northern Gulf Coast.

The rain brought to us by Subtropical Storm Alberto is not over, Monday afternoon showers and thunderstorms will redevelop across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. Because of expected deteriorating weather, the sandbag distribution points will not be open Sunday, the county said.

The storm was about 115 miles (185 km) southwest of Panama City, on the Gulf of Mexico coast as of 2 a.m. EDT, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Alberto could come ashore early Monday, said Dan Pydynowski, a meteorologist with AccuWeather Inc.in State College, Pennsylvania. However, while we have less of a rain and storm threat the humidity and heat will continue to be high.

Alberto's projected storm track has shifted eastward since Friday, lessening its threat to the active oil production areas in the Gulf of Mexico. There's always a low-end risk of severe storms or a quick spin-up tornado on the left (eastern) side of tropical systems, which will be the case for eastern Alabama.
