  • Lions tigers jaguar and bear escape from zoo after flooding from storms in Germany

Local residents were advised to stay in their homes and to call the police if they saw the animals.

A bear had also escaped from the privately owned Eifel zoo, but was shot, a local official told AFP.

It was not immediately clear how or when exactly the animals escaped, but heavy thunderstorms overnight had resulted in bad flooding across the zoo, which is on a riverbank.

German media reports have suggested the animals' enclosures were damaged in a storm, after a river overflowed and damaged fences.

The big cats were only found after the water began receding, said mayor Andreas Kruppert from the town located close to the Luxembourg border.

Vets are said to be on sight as well as police and firefighters.

A spokesman for the district of Bitburg-Pruem, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, said earlier in the day that two lions, two tigers and a jaguar were on the loose.

According to the German broadcaster, heavy rain meant the water level increased and nearly the "entire zoo was flooded".

Friday's escape came two years after a similar case in eastern Germany, when two lions broke out of their cages at the Leipzig zoo.

The 74-acre zoo offers many attractions including a cable auto and a miniature village.

Two lions were among the six animals that escaped their enclosures at a flooded western Germany zoo, before five were recaptured.
