Fiasco Over? Missouri Governor Embroiled In Sex Scandal Finally Resigning - Matt Vespa

  • Republican Missouri Governor Eric Greitens has resigned amid his sexual misconduct scandal

The Republican Governor announced his resignation Tuesday (5/29), blaming "legal harassment" for his troubles.

"I can not allow those forces to continue to cause pain and difficulty to the people I love", Greitens said. He did not take questions from journalists.

The 44-year-old governor made the announcement almost 17 months after taking the oath of the office with a pledge to root out "corrupt career politicians".

Baker took over the investigation into Greitens' alleged misconduct after Gardner dropped a felony invasion-of-privacy charge against the governor. The charge was dropped in early May, but Special Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker is now deciding whether or not to refile.

Greitens, a former Navy SEAL officer, suggested less than two weeks ago that he would never quit fighting the allegations, even as the Legislature considered impeachment.

April 11 - The House investigatory committee releases a graphic report that details instances in which Greitens' former hairdresser says he slapped, spanked, shoved, grabbed and called her derogatory names during a series of sexual encounters in 2015.

Greitens' resignation also allows him to avoid the distinction of becoming the first Missouri governor to be impeached.

"We believe the governor has put the best interest of Missourians first today by choosing to resign", House Speaker Todd Richardson, Speaker Pro Tem Elijah Haahr and Majority Floor Leader Rob Vescovo said in a statement.

Gardner declined to comment on that second charge, saying that it's in the hands of the special prosecutor.

Indirectly referencing his recent legal battles, Greitens said "this ordeal has been created to cause an incredible amount of strain on my family" through "millions of dollars of mounting legal bills, endless personal attacks, created to cause maximum damage to family and friends".

Missouri is going to come together, and we are going to move forward. He is accused of illegally obtaining a donor list to aid his 2016 election campaign from a veterans' charity he founded in 2007.

A St. Louis prosecutor said Wednesday that she is dismissing felony computer-tampering charges against Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R), who announced his resignation on Tuesday amid multiple scandals that marred his once-promising political career. But one response from St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson, in her own words, "missed the mark". And, she insisted of the two cases she brought against the governor, "These cases were not pursued at the expense of my office's priorities". "I will let the fairness of this process be judged by history".

Greitens said it was "a great honor and a privilege" to be governor and he "will always be a fighter for the people of Missouri".

The governor was indicted in February with invasion of privacy, but the charge was dropped this month, with the proviso that it could be re-filed.

The legislative investigation had requested numerous documents from Greitens political campaign and from A New Missouri, Inc., the secretive nonprofit formed by his campaign aides to advocate for his agenda.

The 44-year-old Greitens was a political novice when elected governor in 2016.
