The meeting's apparent goal was last-stage negotiations over the agenda for the historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, slated to take place in Singapore next Tuesday.

The U.S. official did not identify the three ousted military officials.

No Kwang-chol, the head of the North Korean Workers' Party's second economic committee, was chosen to replace Pak Yong-sik, who had served as defense chief since May 2015.

Assad was quoted as saying: "I am going to visit the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and meet Kim Jong-un".

Reuters reported that usa officials feel that there was disagreement within the North Korean military as to how Kim should work with Washington and Seoul.

Japanese Minister of Defense Itsunori Onodera told reporters after the meeting with Mattis and South Korean Minister of National Defense Song Young-moo that the nations agreed "it is very important for North Korea to take concrete actions in a flawless and irreversible way".

The country remains technically at war after hostilities in the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty, and Kim's father and predecessor Kim Jong Il expounded a "Songun" or "military-first" policy that is a foundational plank of the North's ideology.

The area comprising the districts of Tanglin, Newton and Orchard is where the foreign ministry, the USA embassy, and several large hotels are located, including the Shangri-La hotel, mentioned as a possible venue for the June 12 summit.

Trump on Friday revived the summit after cancelling it a week earlier.

Improved infrastructure would also help North Korea lift barriers to monetizing its mineral resources, including outdated and underdeveloped transportation networks and a severe energy shortage.

In addition, as a leaked United Nations report revealed, North Korea exported some forty items to Syria for its missile and chemical weapons programs over a five-year period.

But North Korea's leadership is believed to regard nuclear weapons as crucial to its survival and has rejected unilaterally disarming.

According to Yonhap news agency, which cited intelligence sources, the chief of the general staff Ri Myong Su has also been replaced by his deputy, Ri Yong Gil.

Pyongyang has long argued that it needs nuclear weapons to protect itself against a possible invasion by the US.

The North appears to have brought in new figures amid the changes in inter-Korean relations and the situation on the Korean Peninsula as the previous officials lacked flexibility in thinking ...

However, US Secretary of Defense, Jim Mattis, affirmed on Sunday at an Asian Security Conference, that sanctions on North Korea would only be relaxed after "verifiable and irreversible steps" toward Pyongyang's denuclearization.

Should real progress be made, South Korean President Moon Jae-in's plan involves the development of three economic belts that would link his country's industrial heartland with the North and then with China and Russian Federation.
