The active volcano is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of the capital Guatemala City.

TRT World spoke with Antigua-based journalist Louisa Reynolds for more details.

Video images published by Sacatepezuez television showed a charred landscape where a lava flow came into contact with homes.

Earlier, Conred chief Sergio Cabanas and President Jimmy Morales held a news conference, saying that the eruption left seven dead, 20 injured and affected more than 1.7 million people.

At least 20 people were injured, and authorities have said they feared the death toll could rise with an undetermined number of people unaccounted for.

The volcano's peak soars 3,763 meters above sea level.

Dozens of videos were popping up on social media and local TV, depicting the extent of devastation.

The Volcán de Fuego has spewed a stream of lava into a nearby village and sent a column of smoke and ash into the sky.

The National Disaster Management Agency (Conred) said a river of lava hit the village of El Rodeo, destroying houses and burning people inside.

Hundreds of rescue workers, including firefighters, police and soldiers, worked to help any survivors and recover any more bodies amid the still-smoking lava. He says El Rodeo was buried and other villages have been cut off by the lava.

The eruption of Guatemala's Volcan de Fuego forced federal authorities to declare a nationwide state of emergency Sunday.

The Guatemalan military said it was providing assistance from rescue operations to setting up temporary shelters and clearing volcanic ash from La Aurora airport's runway.

Ash has effected not only Guatemala City but the departments of Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and the popular tourist destination colonial town Antigua. The lava river was running on the other side of the volcano.

Huge plumes of smoke can be seen from across the country and ash rained down in several areas, causing alarm.

Volcanic ash covers parked motorcycles.

Explosions are still coming from the volcano, said Eddy Sánchez, director of the National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala known as INSIVUMEH.
