British PM tells Trump steel tariffs are 'unjustified'

  • US President Donald Trump Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Joseph Dunford display their feelings at Arlington National Cemetery last week

May's comments follow Trump's decision to impose tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum from the EU, Mexico, and Canada at the end of last month. The country buys more than $1 billion worth of pork legs and shoulders, and 90 percent of them come from the US.

Mexico will import more pork products from Europe after imposing a 20 percent tariff on US pork legs and shoulders in retaliation to steel tariffs, Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo said on Tuesday.

His promise comes after Canada, Mexico and China have threatened levies on American agriculture goods in response to new US tariffs and American farmers, who helped put Trump in the White House, worry they will take the brunt of the worldwide anger at the president.

The Trump administration has signaled its willingness to reconsider the trade barrier, citing upcoming NAFTA negotiations as a key factor in whether they will repeal the tariff. Oddly, there was no mention of either the looming tariffs or the stated rationale behind them - other than a brief reference to "President Donald J. Trump's clear goal for achieving a fair trading relationship with China". But the president defended his actions saying the U.S. would soon be in a stronger position with its top trading partners. "To suggest that it's news that Congress would want to reclaim powers that belong to the executive branch, I don't think is exactly newsworthy", he said on CNN.

China and the United States can cooperate in the sphere of trade, but if Washington takes measures against Beijing, the latter will certainly respond in a tit-for-tat manner, said Bian Yongzu, a researcher with the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at the People's University of China.

"The Liberal government is the government that put supply management in place and it is the Liberal government that will protect supply management". It did not provide details of tariff levels or a full list of products at the time.

The groups are calling on the president to lift recent tariffs on aluminum and steel imports as well as the proposed tariffs on other imports from China.

On Friday, he said he'd like to see two separate trade deals done with Canada and Mexico.

The spectre of a trade war between the USA and its allies will no doubt hang over this week's G7 leaders summit in Quebec, when Trump makes his first official visit to Canada as president.

The US last week said it's levying the new metals duties on imports from the nations and the European Union on national security grounds, ending their temporary exemptions.

Analysts say the tariffs are created to hit US Republican strongholds ahead of mid-term elections in November.

The tariffs led to greater steel imports from countries with which Mexico has free trade agreements, and less from countries with which it doesn't, the government said.

"The prime minister, myself, the minister of foreign affairs, cabinet ministers and caucus, and, indeed, the trade negotiators of NAFTA have clearly indicated the Canadian direction", MacAulay said.

Last week however, United States commerce secretary Wilbur Ross said the USA had made insufficient progress with its allies to reduce America's trade deficit, and lifted the waiver.
