Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 Is Designed Specifically For Always Connected Windows PCs

  • Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 850 is a processor built with laptops in mind

Today, in a major first for any ARM vendor, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 850, with a focus explicitly on PC performance rather than smartphone or tablet performance that one would typically expect. While it could power your next laptop (maybe), you nearly certainly won't be seeing the Snapdragon 850 in your next phone.

Qualcomm has been building and defining the segment and role of the Always On, Always Connected PC since it first started talking up its move into Windows 10 territory in 2017.

"Always On, Always Connected" refers to the relatively new type of computer that doesn't completely shut down instead staying connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network even when asleep to allow for constant connectivity, similarly to how a smartphone works. It also comes with the Adreno 630 GPU, bringing features such as 4K video playback and HEVC video encoding of 1080p video up to 120fps.

Qualcomm is aggressively predicting longer battery life, moving from "all day" to "multi-day".

Qualcomm says that it will support 1.2 gigabits per second LTE connectivity speeds and up to 25 hours of continuous usage. As on smartphones, Qualcomm says its Snapdragon processor on PCs offloads numerous maintenance-based functions to low-energy cores to improve power efficiency. The new chip promises to provide high fidelity HD sound thanks to Qualcomm Aqstic and aptX audio.

The Snapdragon X20 modem can now reach speeds of 1.2 Gbps, and Qualcomm will be leveraging the AI capabilities of their Hexagon DSP a lot more with the new platform.

Qualcomm is leaning into the auxiliary features of the new chip with the launch, including the wide array of audio technology.

Qualcomm on Tuesday at Computex 2018 unveiled the Snapdragon 850 Mobile Compute Platform. It can be believed to be a successor to the Snapdragon 835 which was launched for Windows 10 devices a year ago.

Microsoft has also come into play beyond the tech giant's operating system.
