  • Oliver Luck left is leaving his post at the NCAA to join the XFL

Vince McMahon also commented on Oliver Luck's role by saying that his experience will ensure the long term success of the league.

It's not a gimmick.

Remember, the XFL is doing away with all the shtick it used to have. and is trying to be legit.

The XFL's lone season happened in 2001, and was a project from NBC and the WWE.

Luck, who is a former NFL quarterback and father of Indianapolis Colts star Andrew Luck, will start his new gig July 1 with the league set to launch in 2020. It's the second time McMahon has tried to launch the league.

Luck has considerable sports-executive experience, in other words, and his hiring shows that XFL founder Vince McMahon is taking things a little more seriously this time around.

He said he wants to deliver great football, which he said has been "one of the failings of the original league".

"Football has been a constant in my life for 40 years", Luck said in a video released Tuesday by the XFL. He graduated from University of Texas law school in 1987.

"Oliver Luck has been a key member of my leadership team and he has done a superb job at the NCAA over the last three years", NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a statement provided to the Associated Press. "Oliver's values and leadership skills helped keep the Association focused on supporting student-athletes". Eight teams will play a 10-game schedule, and a four-team playoff will determine the champion.

The XFL will embrace the latest on and off-field technology, providing live game coverage, content and real-time engagement across multiple platforms, giving fans greater access than ever before. Host cities and stadiums are now being sought by the league through requests for proposals.
