Bipartisan group of 10 senators challenge Trump over tariffs

Senator Mitch McConnell announced Tuesday that he is canceling most of the Senate's month-long August recess, a move that could keep vulnerable Democrats tethered to Washington as the midterm elections approach.

The statement also said senators will likely have a state work period at the beginning of August before coming back to work in the Senate.

The House and Senate are working to pass as numerous annual twelve spending bills as possible ahead of the September 30 fiscal-year deadline, and McConnell said those bills will now be a priority in August.

In addition to nominations, McConnell said Senate also needed to spend some of August passing individual appropriations bills in order to avoid a last minute massive spending package, like it did in March.

"We have a lot of important work to do", McConnell said after the lunch.

McConnell's revelation, during his exclusive interview on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle", could squash momentum behind a discharge petition that House Democrats' and a few Republicans are pushing to circumvent House leadership and force the full House to debate four immigration bills.

By mid-afternoon, House GOP leaders had released no updates on their plans for a five-week break beginning July 27.

They face the dilemma of either remaining in Washington and forfeiting time they would otherwise use to campaign in their home districts, or remaining in their home states and risking criticism that they're shunning their current duties, the paper reports.

Of the Senate seats on the ballot this election cycle, 26 are held by Democrats and the independents who caucus with them, while just nine are held by Republicans.

"I want the Senate to take up those 500 bills that are sitting there that passed in the House and get those through", said House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. Democrats have far more incumbents seeking re-election this year, and keeping them off the trail could be to the GOP's advantage. "One-eighth of the circuit judges in America have been appointed by Donald Trump and confirmed by this Republican Senate in a year and a half".

One of the Senator's not sponsoring the bill is Senator John DeFrancisco, the Deputy Republican Leader. Their appeal focused on the need to wrap up spending bills and confirm President Trump's nominees to various positions. Last August, recess was scheduled to be pushed back a couple weeks so lawmakers could continue their attempts to repeal Obamacare.

The president remains popular in numerous ruby-red states, including in, where he campaigned for the Republican Senate nominee, Mike Braun, and bashed Democratic Sen. Now some of the biggest Republican donors have launched a war against Trump's tariffs, and once-loyal senators are trying to curb Trump's powers as the country's 45th president. "So I'm going to give them plenty of time".

Senate Republicans, for months fearful of - and outright opposed to - President Donald Trump's actions on tariffs, now have a bill to tie his hands.

Now, McConnell says he aims to make them pay by taking away their vacation time.

"I don't think there's anybody on our side of the aisle that doesn't understand that the 232 authority is being greatly abused", Corker said, addressing reporters.
