In an April interview with TMZ, Rodman said that Kim didn't understand the president until he gave the North Korean strongman a copy of Trump's ghost-written book The Art of the Deal for his birthday in 2017.

Kim Chang Son, director of North Korea's state affairs commission secretariat, and Joe Hagin, a deputy White House chief of staff, met at the hotel in late May to work out security and logistics measures.

"On Singapore meetings, the problem is North Korea doesn't have any money for staying in hotels".

Sanders said the US will continue its "maximum pressure" policy on North Korea until its dismantles its nuclear weapons program. According to her, the White House and State Department were also not soliciting other countries (ie, Singapore) to pay for North Korea's accommodations.

Donald Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani has said North Korea's leader "begged" for their summit to be rescheduled after the USA president cancelled it.

Trump said he didn't want to use the term "maximum pressure" any more, because the two sides were "getting along".

There has been no confirmation of the venue for the summit to discuss ending the North's nuclear weapons programme in return for diplomatic and economic incentives, although several Singapore hotels have figured as candidates.

US President Donald Trump's summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will begin early on June 12 in Singapore, the White House has confirmed in its first announcement of a timetable for the closely-watched meeting.

"It's not that our government has entered into full-fledged preparations to join the North-U.S. summit", the official told reporters.

North Korea's foreign ministry released an angry statement singling out Mr Bolton.

The summit is due to be held following a rapid detente between Pyongyang and Washington - as well as South Korea - in a turn-around from a dramatic escalation of tensions past year, when the North ratcheted up its weapons programme.
