USA allies ready Trump showdown as trade splits G7

Macron said the message of other G7 leaders to Trump on the Iran deal should be: "You're not comfortable with an agreement signed by your predecessor, maybe just because it was signed by your predecessor, but don't stop others from respecting it and don't push Iran to leave, because today it's the best protection we have".

"Getting ready to go to the G-7 in Canada to fight for our country on Trade (we have the worst trade deals ever made)", Trump said on Twitter.

However, Mr Trump's regular tirades over the balance of trade between Japan and the USA has unsettled Tokyo and his apparent determination to engage with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un has also caused some alarm in Japan.

Mr Kudlow described the discontent among USA allies as being like a "family quarrel" but said that the White House was confident that talks would bring a solution.

"I'm always the optimist, I believe it can be worked out, and I'm always hopeful on that point".

Trump in recent weeks held a confrontational phone call with Trudeau on trade tariffs in which he blamed the Canadians for burning down the White House in the War of 1812, media reported on Wednesday.

But Mr Trump showed no sign of backing down on Thursday, first taking to Twitter to accuse both France and Canada of imposing massive tariffs on U.S. goods and then accusing Trudeau of "being so indignant".

Unnamed advisers told the paper Trump also complained about his awkward relationships with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister Theresa May.

That plan fell through when the White House insisted that he agree to including a five-year sunset clause in the deal.

"We also want to work together on the enforcement of the existing worldwide rules and speeding up the development of a new set of guidelines for government-supported export credit". Bob Corker, the official said.

As well as the metals levies, Trump has ordered an investigation into whether auto imports also threaten national economic security, a move that would hit G7 members Germany and Japan particularly hard.

"The U.S. decision to apply tariffs on aluminium and steel to all G7 partners for national security reasons has left us with no other option but to recourse to launching a formal complaint at the World Trade Organization (WTO) and to introduce safeguarding and rebalancing measures", the official said.

"Don't blame Mr Trump, blame the nations that have broken away".

It wasn't immediately clear how such an arrangement would work.

The globalised economy they helped build had both winners and losers but, until Trump's election, the United States was seen as the system's uncontested leader and a major beneficiary. Tariffs, he added, are simply one more tool in the president's toolbox when it comes to repairing it. "We disagree with these, we think they are unjustified. People should realize how serious he is in that respect".

"The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a six country agreement if need be", Macron said in a tweet on Thursday amid warnings that the summit may end without a joint statement from all G7 members.

Trump is no fan of the world's multilateral institutions, and that has him on a collision course with his fellow G7 leaders, creating the so-called G6-plus-one dynamic. "I am anxious because it is destructive to the rules-based worldwide system that the Americans have been the guardian of".
