As a crowded field in the California's governor's race narrowed to two and Democratic candidate Gavin Newsom got his wish to face a Republican opponent in the deep-blue state, Democrats on Wednesday began sizing up the potential pitfalls of the match-up for a number of high-profile races in November.

John Cox, a Republican businessman, who was endorsed by Mr. Trump in the days leading up to the vote, finished second to front runner Gavin Newsom, the state's lieutenant-governor and a former San Francisco mayor.

The two veteran more moderate Republicans were on the outside as Trump and congressional GOP leaders pushed policies that disproportionately affected the Garden State, including an Affordable Care Act repeal bill that would end the state's expansion of Medicaid and tax legislation that curbed the federal deduction for state and local taxes.

The NYT adds: "Mr. Cox's showing represented a major tactical victory for national Republicans as they seek to protect seven Republican-held congressional seats in California that Democrats are targeting as they try to recapture the House". When the Democrats took over, they passed a gasoline tax and now California has the highest gasoline price in the nation and we just recalled a state senator and elected a Republican, Ling-Ling Chang.

California's unusual primary system allows the top two primary candidates to advance to the general election, regardless of party. Democrats need to pick up 23 seats nationwide to retake the House.

"That means it's going to be much clearer in this district who we coordinate with", said Harder, who will face Rep. Jeff Denham in November, barring a surprising turn in late-counted votes.

In the senate race in MS, incumbent Republican Roger Wicker is poised to win another term after winning more than 80 percent of party support. The Trump presidency and the #MeToo movement inspired a rush of women to jump into the race and as many as 33 women appear to have made it onto ballots across California's congressional races. If Grisham wins, she'll be the state's second Latino state executive.

Also in New Mexico, former state Democratic Party chairwoman Debra Haaland, a Laguna Pueblo tribal member, won her primary and could become the first Native American woman in Congress if she wins this fall.

Holding hopes of a "blue wave" in November, Democrats fought to shape the political battlefield in primaries across eight states, none more important than California where Republicans avoided an embarrassing setback in the race for governor.

Democrats were particularly concerned about this possibility in three southern California districts. "We anticipate really strong support in the general election as well".

If Grimm wins, Democrats believe they can capture the seat in November.

Cox, who says he wasn't born from wealth and had to work his way up, is confident he can reach a broad range of voters in the state. It also leaves Republicans with a dilemma: Promoting the tax law could alienate independents, not to mention Democrats. Now in second place is Democrat Gil Cisneros, the lottery victor who's dumping a lot of his own money into the race and recently got the backing of the party establishment. Since Trump first took office early past year, Newsom has dedicated his work to counteracting Trump's policies on everything from immigration to legal weed, running his campaign under the purposely antagonistic tagline, "Resistance With Results".

The governor's race was one of many drawing attention to California.

Levin, whose father's parents were both Jews, said he would continue to emphasize his support for a two-state solution while reaching out to Jewish voters, who are clustered mainly in northern San Diego. But just having Cox's name on the ballot may give many Republicans that much more of a reason to show up and vote, which could have an effect on so many crucial races for Congress.

A key Senate race took shape in the heart of Trump country as well.

Meanwhile, Republicans are looking at Montana as a chance to take away a Democrat seat in the US Senate.
