A Tesla vehicle driving in "autopilot" mode sped up in the moments prior to a fatal crash in California, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board. A Tesla website says its vehicles have "full self-driving hardware".

Tesla just recently opened orders for the next two configurations of the vehicle - the dual-motor AWD and Performance Model 3 Considering that the company is aiming to begin manufacturing the Model 3 Performance by July, adding complexities such as aluminum pedals to the line would likely prevent the vehicle's rollout to be fully optimized.

The recently unveiled Semi truck and Roadster sports vehicle will arrive at around the same time, according to Musk, both with better performance than originally announced, which included a 500-mile range for the truck and a 250 miles per hour top speed for the Roadster. Notably, the car's Autopilot feature was engaged at the time of the crash.

Tesla hoped to have pinpointed a spot for a Gigafactory in Europe by the end of this year, according to its chief, who added that the company ultimately expects to have 10 to 12 such plants worldwide. The firetruck was unoccupied and no injuries were claimed by anyone at the crash scene, authorities said.

Once the company said that the Autopilot system was switched on in the Mountain View crash, the safety board broadened the investigation to include the vehicle's automation.

It contributed to a lot of issues with the early production ramp, but now Tesla is gradually going back to automation across various parts of the Model 3 production process, including the Model 3 body line, which is now nearly completely automated, according to the automaker. The auto was in Autopilot mode during this time, the report states, a feature which is created to match the speed of a slower vehicle travelling ahead of it.

A Tesla spokeswoman pointed to passages in the company's owners' manual warning that automatic emergency braking is created to reduce severity of a crash and isn't created to avoid a collision. However, he also joked that he has an "issue with time", referring to his overly optimistic and often missed production target dates. "It is the driver's responsibility to drive safely and remain in control of the vehicle at all times", it says.

Shareholders sided with the board's recommendations on all agenda items, Todd Maron, Tesla's general counsel, said during the company's annual meeting Tuesday in Mountain View, California. McPherson tells the I-Team that Tesla's Autopilot doesn't always detect hands, unless the driver is moving the steering wheel. The report also said the electric car's high-voltage battery reignited five days after the March 23 crash and a local fire department responded to extinguish the fire. "The battery was monitored with a thermal imaging camera, but no active fire operations were conducted".
