AT&T To Launch Its WatchTV ‘Skinny Bundle’ Video Streaming Service

  • AT&T's latest unlimited plans include a new live TV service

Unlimited & More is $70 per line.

The No. 2 U.S. wireless carrier is putting to use Time Warner's stable of content, including TV channels like TBS and CNN, to drive sales of the wireless plans at a time when carriers have struggled to find growth.

A federal judge earlier this month approved the merger of AT&T and Time Warner, handing AT&T a win after the Department of Justice sued to stop the deal, saying a merger would give AT&T unfair leverage over rival pay-TV providers.

The new service isn't created to replace AT&T's DirecTV Now, a cable-style streaming service that offers about 60 channels for $35 a month.

Watch TV will be free for users on AT&T's newest unlimited plans, and will be $15 for everyone else. WatchTV will also be available as a standalone offering for $15 per month. Customers who choose two new unlimited plans, called "AT&T Unlimited & More" and "AT&T Unlimited & More Premium" will be available next week and come with access to the WatchTV app, which includes 31 live channels. The new plans launch next week. Premium services include HBO, Cinemax, SHOWTIME or STARZ as well as music streaming services like Amazon Music Unlimited and Pandora Premium.

The new plans also introduce a new entry-level price. It's not clear if that would replace the free HBO "for life" that AT&T was running on their old plans, but I'm sure that will be clarified soon.

Subscribers of current and new plans can also get $15 a month off DirecTV Now.

AT&T says its new plans will be the first of new offers that leverage its new entertainment holdings.

Backed by several cable networks, including A&E, AMC, Discovery, Scripps, and Viacom, the Philo TV lineup includes about 35 channels from a variety of sources, including A&E, AMC, BBC America, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, Food Network, HGTV, History, MTV, Nickelodeon, TLC, Travel Channel.

WatchTV is what's known as a skinny bundle, stripping out the local networks and sports channels for more entertainment-focused options.

So clearly this is AT&T trying to further the entertainment options on their unlimited plans, but they're going a little bit further with that, too.
