Redoine Faid staged a dramatic escape from a French prison using a helicopter.

"It was a spectacular escape". Two members of the gang are serving lengthy jail sentences for her murder.

According to Agence France-Presse, Faid has been sentenced to serve 25 years "for masterminding a May 2010 botched armed robbery, in which a policewoman was killed".

The crime took place when Faid's brother was visiting him.

This is his second prison break: in 2013, he escaped after seizing four guards as human shields and blowing several doors off with dynamite.

They were also reportedly armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles.

The helicopter was later found in a northeastern suburb of Paris about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the prison, one source said.

A police source said the helicopter pilot was a flight instructor waiting for a student when he was seized by Faid's accomplices, before being later freed in a state of shock.

PARIS - A notorious French criminal serving 25 years for murder used a helicopter Sunday to escape from a prison south of Paris, igniting a huge manhunt around the French capital.

He escaped from the prison in Reau, Seine-et-Marne, near Paris, in just a matter of minutes on Sunday after the helicopter landed in the courtyard. Unarmed guards said they could do nothing to prevent it. Faid was talking with his brother at that time.

He staged that escape less than half an hour after arriving at a prison in northern France. He was on the run for 6 weeks before he was recaptured in a hotel room.

Faid had already previously escaped from jail.

In 2009 he wrote a book about his experiences of growing up in Paris's crime-ridden suburbs and graduating into a life of crime.

The 2010 robbery that he was imprisoned for involved the shooting of a female police officer.
