In both of his Sunday appearances, Bolton also refused to answer questions about reports from NBC News and the Washington Post, in which anonymous USA intelligence officials say North Korea has been ramping up its production of nuclear fuel at multiple secret sites and coming up with ways to deceive the us about the scale of its nuclear weapons program. "Physically we would be able to dismantle the overwhelming bulk of their programmes within a year".

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been pushing for more follow-up talks to flesh out details of the denuclearization, but no date has been set for when they would take place.

The Financial Times reported that Pompeo hopes to visit Pyongyang in the second week of this month.

However, the officials believed North Korea was "positioning itself to extract every concession it can from the Trump administration - while clinging to nuclear weapons it believes are essential to survival", NBC News reported.

Chinese President Xi Jinping shakes hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Beijing, China, in this undated photo released June 20, 2018 by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency.

These reports all obviously contradict President Trump's public stance on North Korea, which was that his negotiations with Kim were successful, and as a result, "there is no longer a nuclear threat" from North Korea.

He said the one-year program the proposing would cover all of the North's chemical and biological weapons, nuclear programs and ballistic missiles.

"But there's not any. starry eyed feeling among the group doing this that we're well, well aware of what the North Koreans have done in the past", he added.

Trump has suspended military exercises in the Korean peninsula after North Korea stopped carrying out missile and nuclear tests.

Over the weekend NBC News first reported that Pyongyang has in fact recently been increasing fuel production for nuclear weapons at several hidden sites.

Pompeo told CNN late last month that he would not set a deadline for the denuclearization of North Korea and would "constantly reassess" whether enough progress is being made to continue negotiations. They also pointed out that North Korea has made similar agreements in the past, only to renege.

Siegfried Hecker, a nuclear scientist and Stanford University professor, has predicted it would take around 10 years to dismantle and clean up a substantial part of North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear site.

The president also made it sound as though the had made a real deal with Kim, when all they actually did was sign a vague mutual commitment to denuclearization.

Just last week, Trump said that North Korea was destroying four of its nuclear test sites and that the process of "total denuclearisation. has already started".

"North Korea remains free to manufacture more nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles and other weapons of mass destruction - even though it has unilaterally frozen testing of its nuclear weapons and certain ballistic missiles", he said.
