Brazil defeated Mexico 2-0. In the end, Mexico leaves Russian Federation with consecutive scoreless matches.

Brazil could play right into their hands.

But many are exhausted of the theatrics, not least Mexican coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who criticised a nameless player for "too many faking fouls".

Spain, Argentina and Portugal have all followed reigning champions Germany through the trap door, with Mexico the first to wound the Germans with a mesmerizing 1-0 win in the group stages.

Just like they did with their superbly-worked opening goal.

Rafael Marquez made his 148th cap for Mexico at his fifth World Cup. A toe-poked attempt to beat Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa in the 88th minute was diverted into the path of Robert Firmino, who scored with a tap-in just like Neymar did. Neymar was starting to showcase his talents but he was left writhing in pain after a tussle with second-half replacement Miguel Layun.

Mexico's midfielder Andres Guardado (L) and Brazil's forward Neymar speak together during the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup round of 16 football match between Brazil and Mexico at the Samara Arena in Samara on July 2, 2018. But Brazilian keeper Alisson, lifted it over the goal for his first save of the game.

He also said that "for a generation of Mexican players, this was the last opportunity to reach a World Cup quarter-final in their prime".

This is a testament to Brazil's defence who are often subjected to accusations they are rarely tested and once they are they won't be able to cope. We wasted a lot of time because of one player.

Led by a heroic effort from offensive centerpiece Neymar, Brazil recovered from a somewhat slippery start to the match with two second-half goals to send Mexico home on its first game of the knockout stage for the seventh straight tournament.

The game in Samara, Russia, kicked off in sweltering 92-degree temperatures, making it as much a struggle for survival as it was a soccer match.

Reaction: Neymar scared by a ghost?

A video review reversed the decision to award a penalty kick and Neymar's frustrations a few minutes later led to a yellow card.

But as the match progressed Mexico exhausted in sweltering conditions and any hopes of an upset ended when Neymar created space down the left and put Firmino through for an easy goal. Tite came to join him.

Bidding for a record-extending sixth title in Russia, Brazil weathered an early storm at Samara Arena before Neymar turned on the style to underline their status as favourites.

It can have no complaints about its loss to Brazil, though; the Brazilians were the better team and looked fresher even at the end.

"Us attackers have to score the goals because we know that we are very strong at the back".
