Samsung phones are texting users’ photos to random contacts, without permission

If you can answer "yes" to both, then you'd better make sure you're using a texting app other than Samsung Messages for the time being.

Multiple people stated there was no evidence on their phone of the error, they only learned of it when the recipient told them. The Samsung Messages app doesn't show any sign of sending the photos, meaning the user is completely unaware of the picture messaging.

According to user reports, the problem stems from Samsung Messages, the default texting app on Galaxy devices, which (for reasons that haven't been determined), is erroneously sending pictures stored on the devices to random contacts via SMS.

"Oddly enough, my wife's phone did that last night, and mine did it the night before", said Reddit user Sfkn123. "Concerned customers are encouraged to contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG", Samsung said in a statement.

This can be done by going to Settings - Apps - Samsung Messages - Permissions - Storage.

Another Redditor said: "Give me a spontaneously exploding phone any day of the week, Samsung, instead of this nightmare scenario".

Per the report, the bug has been experienced by a number of users, including owners of late model devices such as the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S9.

The current theory seems to be that the bug is being caused by a recent RCS (Rich Communication Services) profile update that certain carriers - including T-Mobile - rolled out. RCS was meant to update the old short messaging system (SMS) protocol with new features.

Both persons are on the same T-Mobile plan and it seems like anecdotes from other Redditors share this couples dynamic.

Speaking to Gizmodo, Samsung said it was aware of the issue and its technical teams were looking into it.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Samsung for further comment.
