The Lakers Have Renounced Julius Randle

  • Fiesty guard Rajon Rondo is heading to the LA Lakers

The Lakers reached a one-year, $9 million deal with the 32-year-old point guard.

It didn't take Julius Randle long to find a home.

According to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, the Lakers released Randle at his own request.

The young power forward played extremely well in 2017-18 and likely could've been a good fit next to LeBron James.

With Rondo as a pass-first point guard without much of a shot, he's a sensible back-up to Lonzo Ball, unless he beats out LaVar Ball's son for the job.

Rondo reportedly agreed to sign a one-year contract with the Lakers on Monday.

The Lakers also added versatility with James, Rondo and Stephenson all triple-double threats on any given night. Randle is more of a ball-handler and off-the-dribble threat. In doing so, it allowed Los Angeles to match any deal that the talented big man could sign elsewhere. The four-time All-Star also won a championship in 2008 with the Boston Celtics. The free-agent class of 2019 is projected to be deeper and more talented than this one (Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, Klay Thompson, Karl-Anthony Towns and possibly Kevin Durant if he opts out of his existing deal), with the exception of James, of course.

The Laker experiment this season is going to be fascinating to watch. Cousins is coming off a torn Achilles, but if and when he's healthy, he gives the Warriors a full set of five All-Stars in their starting lineup to combat whatever LeBron and the Lakers assemble. It was reported earlier today that Randle was excited about the possibility of playing on the Lakers in 2018-19.

He has career averages of 13.5 points and 8.9 rebounds in 238 National Basketball Association games (182 starts). His progression since he was drafted out of Kentucky with the No. 7 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft raised eyes in his fourth NBA season.

With Randle's departure, the Lakers will have no players left on their roster who played with Kobe Bryant in his final game in 2016.
