Croatia ends Russia’s run, advances to World Cup semifinals

Russia's World Cup dream ended within agonising sight of the semi-finals as they went down 4-3 on penalties to Croatia after another gallant performance in front of their fanatical fans which again belied their lowly ranking.

Croatia's Dejan Lovren and Russia's Fyodor Smolov look up at the ball. Mario Fernandes (Russia) header from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner.

Croatia, for whom Andrej Kramaric and Domagoj Vida had earlier found the net, advance to their first World Cup semi-final since 1998.

Fernandes then went from hero to villain, the scorer of the equalizing extra-time goal dragging his penalty kick woefully wide, handing Croatia the advantage.

The victor of this game will face England in the semi-final on Wednesday. Igor Akinfeev later blocked an attempt from Mateo Kovacic.

Ivan Rakitic had a good opportunity from a free kick just outside the box after a quarter-hour but could not keep his shot near the target.

31 - Goal! Russia 1, Croatia 0.

Croatia, beaten in just three of their last 22 competitive outings prior to this game, responded well and were back on level terms eight minutes later.

Slack defending allowed Croatia to level eight minutes later.

But all of Russian Federation held its collective breath when a shot from Ivan Perisic on the hour mark struck the inside of the post and the ball somehow rolled across the face of the goal to safety - the Croatian winger couldn't believe he hadn't scored.

Cheryshev exploited it in a way the likes of Jesse Lingard and Harry Kane could come Wednesday, launching a long-range effort which had Danijel Subasic helpless in the Croatia goal.

The teams then went back and forth in regulation, and neither could find the victor, sending the game into extra time.

Vida removed his shirt as he ran away in celebration, possibly thinking Croatia were heading through.

Gareth Southgate's young squad became just the third England team to make the semi-finals as they continued to make a mockery of dampened pre-tournament expectations with another impressive display. With players such as world-class midfielder Luka Modric and a string of top-level forwards including Mario Mandzukic, Ante Rebic, Andrej Kramaric and Ivan Perisic, Zlatko Dalic's team scored at least two goals in each of their three group matches, including firing three past hapless Argentina.

Going to penalties will not be an ideal ploy for both sides with Russian Federation boasting Akinfeev between the posts while their opponents will have Danijel Subasic, who against Denmark became only the second keeper in World Cup history to make three saves in their shootout win.

Having knocked out Spain on penalties in the previous round, Russia, 70th in the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings, again defied the odds to take 20th ranked Croatia to a shootout with a 2-2 draw after extra time but on this occasion their marksmanship deserted them.
