  • Last tragic picture of Navy SEAL who died trying to rescue trapped boys

"A navy Seal just passed away last night".

The Daily Mail reported that Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osottanakorn said he asked billionaire technology entrepreneur Elon Musk to send engineers from his SpaceX and Boring Company firms to help with the rescue.

Drilling into the cave and extracting the boys from above has been suggested, but Narongsak, speaking at a news conference, said only 18 of 100 holes that have been located are potentially viable.

The boys, he added, "cannot dive at this time" and are not ready to make the nearly six-hour journey out of the cave. A major concern of the rescuers is that oxygen levels in their safe space could fall dangerously low. The usual level is around 21 per cent.

The authorities in Thailand say an air line into the cave has now been successfully installed.

Military (centre) and civilian police closed off all access to the Tham Luang cave Sunday morning and ordered all "unnecessary personnel" including media to move 2km back as final rescue preparations began.

Rescuers have conceded that evacuating the boys is a race against time with monsoon rains expected to undo days of round-the-clock drainage of the deluged cave.

"No, not today", CNN quoted Narongsak Osottanakorn, the governor of Chiang Rai province as saying.

But he indicated that further downpours might force their hand and speed up attempts to extract them despite the dangers of carrying out such a gargantuan effort.

The boys, 11 to 16, and their coach went exploring in the cave after a soccer game June 23.

According to the BBC, the highly trained diver ran out of of oxygen during the 11 hour trip in and out of the cave and was unable to be revived by his diving partner.

But the path to freedom is hugely unsafe for the boys, some of whom are unable to swim and have no scuba experience in an environment with low visibility that confounds even the most skilled.

The letters, handwritten in blue pen and pencil on pieces of paper, were released by the Thai Navy SEALs on Facebook earlier on Saturday.

Gov. Osottanakorn said "air is a major issue", but added that United Kingdom experts had confirmed the conditions in the chamber where the children are located were "all right".

Despite their ordeal, one of the trapped children had thoughts about getting out and helping his mother work at the local market.

Thai Navy SEALs helped to carry the messages, giving the boys' families a much needed insight as to how their children were coping after spending two weeks inside the labyrinth.

In the notes the children have said they want to go home as soon as they are out of the cave, that they are strong and not to worry about them.

"It's very risky (diving out)".

The first page of the notes, written by assistant coach Ekkapol Chanthawong, says: "What we want to communicate: The kids say don't be anxious about them".

The accident marks the first major setback for the gargantuan effort, which has gripped Thailand as the nation holds its breath for their safe escape. Early this morning, ITV News in the United Kingdom.

Several rescuers can be seen struggling through dark, narrow passages. It's going to be really hard for them. This is made all the more complicated by the fact that the coach and numerous boys can't swim.
