North Korea lashes out at United States, calls talks 'extremely regrettable'

  • The motorcade carrying U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo drives towards Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang North Korea Friday

When US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo flew out of Pyongyang after negotiations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's right-hand Kim Yong Chol man he tried to appear positive, insisting progress had been made.

President Donald Trump suggested on Monday that China might be seeking to derail USA efforts aimed at denuclearizing North Korea, but said he was confident that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would uphold a pact the two agreed last month.

Despite Mr Trump's confidence that Mr Kim is committed to giving up nuclear weapons, the reconciliation process between the United States and North Korea was thrown into crisis on Sunday when Pyongyang angrily rejected Washington's "unilateral and gangster-like" demand for rapid nuclear disarmament.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo dismissed North Korea's accusation of a "gangster-like mindset" in denuclearization talks, saying the two nations had productive conversations that will continue in the days ahead.

"In light of the once-unimaginable prosperity and partnership we have with Vietnam today, I have a message for Chairman Kim Jong Un: President Trump believes your country can replicate this path", he said, repeating President Donald Trump's pledge to help improve North Korea's economy and provide it with security assurances in return for Kim giving up nuclear weapons. "When we spoke to them about the scope of denuclearisation, they did not push back", he said.

"The issues the U.S. side insisted on during the talks were the same cancerous ones that the past USA administrations had insisted on", the ministry said, referring to the idea of compete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.

The secretary of state is under pressure to deliver a more concrete disarmament plan after the two leaders signed a vague one and a half page document that didn't provide a timetable for dismantling North Korea's nuclear arsenal.

"North Korea reaffirmed its commitment to complete denuclearization", he said on Sunday during a visit to Japan.

"Sanctions will remain in place until final, fully verified denuclearization", Pompeo reportedly stated.

Pompeo had hoped during his recent visit to Pyongyang to press North Korea to work toward a timetable to end its nuclear program and come up with details of how verification of that can be carried out.

"People are going to make stray comments after meetings", Pompeo said.

According to Graham, China is using the north to force the U.S. to negotiate on trade.

The North Koreans had a different take.

According to USA media reports, Pompeo did not meet Kim during the visit, unlike his previous trips during which he had met with the DPRK's top leader.

"It seems the USA misunderstood our goodwill and patience", the statement said.

"Pompeo's visit I think was a useful beginning to set out parameters and to start working on the details of a deal", said Joel Wit, founder of the 38 North research institute.

He said North Korea said it offered to discuss the closure of a missile engine test site, which would "physically affirm" a move to halt the production of intercontinental range ballistic missiles, that the two sides had agreed that a Pentagon team would meet North Korean officials on or about Thursday at the border between North and South Korea to discuss the repatriation of remains.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, meanwhile, accused China of using its influence over the North to sabotage the diplomatic process because of its trade war with the United States.

"I see China's hands all over this". He alluded to an exchange between Pompeo and chief North Korean negotiator Kim Yong Chol in Pyongyang.
