  • Unbelievable scenes as Ireland's Dan Martin wins Tour de France stage

"I was picking wheels and seemed to be in a good position", Cavendish said.

"I had a little coming together with Alexander Kristoff, it might've been my fault and it just stopped me dead".

Both title hopefuls were left behind by the rest of the top riders as they increased the pace hunting for the win that finally went to Daniel Martin of Ireland.

Sagan, who was been guilty of watching Gaviria a little bit too much in the recent stages, opened up his sprint early today and was overhauled by Groenewegen, Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) and the Quick-Step rider. "I knew if I could get a gap it would be hard to close from behind".

Martin came home second the last time a Tour stage ended in Mur de Bretagne three years ago and he admitted he had been obsessed about winning here this time on a punchy climb that suited his abilities.

Greg van Avermaet extended his yellow jersey lead after bagging three extra bonus seconds at the bonus sprint.

"I knew I wouldn't make it back so it was about limiting the time loss", Dumoulin said.

Defending champion Chris Froome (Team Sky) and the other overall contenders finished in or close to the main group as overnight leader and Olympic road race champion Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) retained the yellow jersey.

With Team Sunweb's Michael Matthews forced to abandon the race in the morning, a sixth green jersey in seven years already looks like being Sagan's to lose.

"The first days were not good enough, the legs were not good".

"I had good sensations but nothing outstanding, I was at my maximum".

Saturday's eighth stage is a 181-km ride between Dreux and Amiens that should once again favour the sprinters. He finished the hilly, 204.5 kilometer (127.1 miles) stage through Brittany - from Lorient to Quimper - in 4 hours, 48 minutes and 6 seconds.

The 231km stage from Fougeres to Chartres saw multiple breakaway attempts, but on a flat route with occasional crosswinds, none seemed likely to stick - not least because the majority were undertaken by lone riders.

The peloton set off amid good racing conditions for the longest stage on the race, with a finish line opposite the 800-year-old cathedral of Chartres, a UNESCO world heritage site.
