Family meets Sharif, Maryam in Adiala Jail

  • Ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam sit on a Lahore-bound flight due for departure at Abu Dhabi International Airport UAE on 13 July 2018

Initially it was said that the duo will be shifted by a helicopter, but the idea was dropped due to darkness.

The police in Pakistan have filed several First Information Reports against leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, charging them with involvement in terrorism, inciting violence and attempted murder following unrest in Lahore on Friday, The Express Tribune reported on Monday. She through a hand-written application to the jail superintendent said that she would prefer to stay with general women prisoners and would take the meal served to them.

NAB had requested the court to condone their presence due to security reasons.

The paper slammed confusion of authorities about where to lodge them after their arrest.

The Etihad Airways flight EY243 arrived in Lahore from Abu Dhabi.

Sharif's PML-N expects a groundswell of support as he returns from London, where his wife Kulsoom is critically ill and undergoing cancer treatment.

"There was also confusion about the mode of travel from the airport to the jail", it reported.

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials took their passport for immigration.

Legal experts say that without surrendering to authorities, Sharif would have not been eligible to appeal the verdict.

The lawyers' team conducted a meeting with Nawaz Sharif at the prison that is holding the convicted prime minister.

Analysts have said Sharif's return - one week after he was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison by a corruption court over the purchase of high-end properties in London - could help lift his party's fortunes ahead of the vote.

Pakistan's National Accountability Court ordered their arrest for failing to explain how the family acquired London properties.

Their passports were confiscated and subsequently boarded onto a small chartered plane bound for Islamabad International Airport (IIA), The Dawn reported. However, later sources claimed that the authorities chose to keep the two at Adiala Jail.

Around 10,000 police officers have been deployed across the city to maintain law and order.

Internet and mobile services have been cut off in most parts of Lahore and will be suspended until midnight.

According to the sources, Nawaz Sharif asked Shahbaz Sharif to take a hard line against the arrest and intimidation of the party workers and leaders who wanted to accord him a welcome on his return. Scores of PML-N workers were arrested in the run-up to Sharifs' arrival, the party said.

Police had hindered all streets to the airplane terminal to stop the PML-N activists and restricted political get-togethers.

The country's media regulator warned local news channels to abstain from airing statements "by political leadership containing defamatory and derogatory content targeting various state institutions specifically judiciary and armed forces", the regulator said in a statement.

"The people of Lahore has given a verdict ahead of July 25 polls", he declared.
