With Putin standing on a podium next to him, Trump said he didn't "see any reason why it would be" that Russian Federation intervened in the 2016 presidential election to help him win.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, said he was not buying Trump's new version of events. I will say this: "I don't see any reason why it would be", Trump said.

"Just today the Russian Ministry of Defense publicly stated that it is prepared to start implementing an agreement you apparently struck in Helsinki with President Putin, an agreement that neither Congress nor the American people have been informed about", the lawmakers wrote.

"In a key sentence in my remarks I said the word "would" instead of 'wouldn't.' The sentence should have been I don't see any reason why I wouldn't or why it wouldn't be Russian Federation".

"I never thought I would see this", she said, explaining that even the majority of people at Fox News were "going crazy" over what happened.

But even as Trump said he accepted US intelligence agencies' conclusions that Russian Federation was behind the election hacking, he added, as he has before: "It could be other people also".

Trump maintained Tuesday's summit with Putin went "even better" than his meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

Schumer also urged the Senate to take up legislation to boost security for USA elections and to revive a measure passed earlier by the Judiciary Committee to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election interference. He said that he and Putin met to "tackle some of the most pressing issues facing humanity".

"President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin", McCain continued. "The president's statements today in Helsinki demonstrate his continued refusal to accept the unanimous conclusions of USA intelligence leaders and the bipartisan findings of the Senate Intelligence Committee", Collins said in a statement.

He said the media have failed to indicate Trump is trying to "ease tensions" with Russian Federation, which he noted holds a massive stockpile of nuclear weapons.

"You know, Russian Federation and the United States control 90% of the nuclear weapons in the world and getting along with Russian Federation - and not only for that reason - it's a good thing, not a bad thing", he said.

The US president was also asked whether he held Russian Federation accountable on any particular issue.

McConnell said he was speaking from the Senate because he thinks "it's important for friends and allies to hear from us". "And I think we're all to blame".

But while the United States leader expressed his "full faith and support for America's great intelligence agencies", he insisted that "Russia's actions had no impact at all on the outcome of the election".

Top administration officials have accepted this conclusion, such as former Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo who is now Mr Trump's secretary of state.

He also denied that his campaign had colluded in the effort and maintained that Russia's action had no impact on the result.

"Thank you @RandPaul, you really get it!'" the President tweeted.

Trump ally Newt Gingrich said the comments were the "most serious mistake of his presidency", urging him to clarify.

Mr Trump's former communications director Anthony Scaramucci told CNN the "optics are bad" and "he has to reverse course immediately".

Republican Rep. Erik Paulsen offered a scathing assessment on Twitter, writing: "President Trump's performance in Helsinki was embarrassing".

As the bipartisan sentiment gained traction, White House aides reportedly hoped it would sway Trump and convince him to deviate from his stance, according to The New York Times. Paul asked during a September 2015 Republican primary debate."Would we not all be anxious to have someone like that in charge of the nuclear arsenal?"
