Amazon's Prime Day runs into snags swiftly

  • A record number of brown Amazon boxes will be landing on doorsteps this week

Amazon says it's working to resolve the glitches on its website that kept shoppers from buying on its much-hyped Prime Day.

Individual product pages appeared to not be affected and were still functional, though there were still issues involving adding items to carts for purchase.

Other best-sellers ranged from tech products like phone chargers, SD cards, and Phillips Hue light bulbs, to home products like vacuum cleaners and laundry detergent, to video games and PlayStation memberships.

Amazon Prime Day is here and for 36 hours, the deals will keep on coming.

Prime Day launched at noon Seattle time on Monday, and immediately there were problems that kept users from using three Amazon channels - the Amazon.com website, the mobile shopping app and the digital voice assistant. This year, the e-tailer said a record number of Prime members shopped in 17 countries, including for the first time members in Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

The deals won't just be online as 2018 is the first Prime Day since Amazon purchased the Whole Foods grocery store chain.

Customers are "primed for Prime Day", says Kelly Rundle, founder of Simply Sales, a company that helps Amazon retailers sell on the platform.

This year Amazon's desktop and mobile websites both experienced major glitches on Monday, making it hard for customers to make purchases and sparking a social media storm in response. Perhaps more importantly, though, was the surge in Prime membership.

Outside of Amazon-branded products, the Instant Pot, 23 and Me DNA test and the LifeStraw water filter were the best-selling items in the U.S., while the Bosch cordless drill, Philips Hue light strip and Finish dishwasher tablets were purchased the most in the UK.

"Our analysis indicates the robust North America retail channel is showing no signs of slowing down in [the second half of 2018] as the Prime membership moat that Bezos & Co. have built is gaining further steam in the field and the Amazon flywheel effect is further playing out globally among consumers", he wrote in a note to clients. It's hoping to keep Prime attractive for current and would-be subscribers after raising the US annual membership fee by 20 per cent to $119 and to $12.99 for the month-to-month option.

At Amazon-owned Whole Foods, organic strawberries were best-sellers. Last year's Prime Day sale was bigger than both Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2016 for the online retailer with sales growing by 60% worldwide over the previous year. To push its subscription programme in all its markets, Amazon announced a heavily-advertised Prime Day sale on 16 July that was extended by 12 hours.

When online, the links on the main page advertising the Prime Day deals instead went nowhere - except to the main page itself.

The sale starts at midday on Monday 16 July 2018.

A few months ago, I wrote about the six best-selling anti-aging products on Amazon, and one brand definitely stood apart from the competition.
