  • Antonio Conte's turbulent reign at Chelsea has come to an end

Chelsea have confirmed that they have sacked manager Antonio Conte, though they face the prospect of a prolonged legal battle with the former Juventus boss.

The 59-year-old former Napoli head coach becomes Roman Abramovich's ninth full-time manager in his 15 years as owner less than 24 hours after Conte parted company with the club he led to a league and FA Cup title. "Best of luck, Maurizio!"

Speaking to his new club's official website, Sarri said: "I am very happy to be coming to Chelsea and the Premier League".

He had done little to hide his dissent over Chelsea's transfer business in the summer of 2017 and winter of 2017-18, making thinly-veiled criticisms of "the club".

Playmaker Fabregas "liked" a message welcoming Conte's departure on Twitter, later apologising and suggesting he had pressed the button in error.

City claim Jorginho was "bullied" by Napoli to instead join Chelsea, who offered more money and eventually landed the player along with Maurizio Sarri.

The west London side did manage to end Conte's final campaign on a positive note, however, by beating Manchester United to win the FA Cup in the final back in May.

Pep Guardiola had identified the Italy worldwide as his primary midfield target following his eye catching displays against City in last season's Champions League and even singled the 26-year-old out for glowing praise.

Sarri is the 13th permanent boss at Chelsea since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the club in June 2003 and the sixth Italian to get the job.

The Russian's visa issues, the indefinite halting of plans to rebuild Stamford Bridge and the challenge for consistent on-field success all point to hard times ahead.

Chelsea's first game of pre-season is the July 23 friendly with Perth Glory in Western Australia, while the transfer window for Premier League clubs closes on August 9.

With two trophies, Conte's spell as boss will likely be considered a success.

And Italy midfielder Jorginho could also move to London from the Naples club.

Chelsea finally put an end to Conte's two-year reign on Friday.

He then wrote on Twitter: "Thank you Mister for another Premier League title and FA Cup".
