  • Tayyip Erdogan Praises Mesut Ozil's Decision To Quit German Football Team

Ghana internationals Fatau Dauda and Kevin-Prince Boateng have taken to social media to pay tribute to Mesut Ozil following his retirement from Germany duty.

He had faced heavy criticism during the World Cup, especially over a controversial photograph with Erdogan in May ahead of presidential and parliamentary polls in Turkey.

His move has divided opinion in Germany but received warm applause in Turkey, whose government has long campaigned against what Ankara sees as rising Islamophobia in Europe. Not because of some picture, of of political decision.

When Germany crashed out of the World Cup in Russian Federation after the knock-out stage, Ozil was made a scapegoat by some pundits in a group of senior players who failed to perform.

"Because more is at stake than just the future of the German national football team".

"But when high-ranking DFB officials treat me as they did, disrespect my Turkish roots and selfishly turn me into political propaganda, then enough is enough".

A year or so ago, I met up with Mesut Özil and, perhaps unsurprisingly, we found ourselves comparing notes on being the offspring of immigrants.

Ozil ends his global career with 92 caps, 23 goals and 40 assists, and was also a member of the squad that won the World Cup in 2014.

To claim he is anything other than 100 per cent committed to Germany is madness, but Grindel should not be surprised by Sunday's statement.

Ozil met Erdogan in May along with fellow Germany worldwide Ilkay Gundogan, the Manchester City player who is also of Turkish descent.

Patrice Evra, who had his own clashes with senior management during his worldwide career with France, which included being stripped of Les Bleus' captaincy as the result of a mutiny at the 2010 World Cup, went one further, tweeting: "Respect".

A lot of the decision-making around Germany's 2018 World Cup was wrong, including the choice of base camp, the choice to leave the likes of Leroy Sane and Sandro Wagner at home, the choices around the starting XIs in each group game. "Not only is he a disgrace to yourself, but also and more importantly a shame to German football and the people of Germany".
