Demare silences detractors with victory on stage 18

  • Geraint Thomas extended his overall lead to 2:05 by finishing second on Stage 19

Sagan had misjudged the corner on the twisting, narrow road off the top of the mountain and went off it into a forest.

Kangert went over the top of the Montee de Peyragudes with the trio of Alaphilippe, Herrada, and Durasek followed by a group that consisted of Alejandro Valverde, Marc Soler (Movistar), Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott), Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe) Dani Navarro, Jesus Herrada (Cofidis), Dani Martinez (EF-Drapac), and Omar Fraile (Astana), with the peloton behind as Nairo Quintana, who suffered two punctures on the first climb but was back on easily.

Froome has said that he has been repeatedly spat at since the race started, and spectators have punched him and tried to make him fall off his bike. "But when I got back to the hotel and was showed the pictures it was obviously something else".

Knowing his Tour was most likely over, Gilbert's effort to continue for another 60km was either incredibly gutsy or incredibly ill-advised. "A final decision about taking on stage 18 tomorrow will be taken from the team tomorrow morning".

X-rays found no fractures however, with Bora-Hansgrohe reporting Sagan suffered heavy abrasions and some bruises on his right side. "It could be worse". But with so many teams eager to chase, they were eventually reeled in 17km from the finish.

"I definitely felt it".

"That last climb will just be down to the legs but we will just keep doing what we've been doing".

Primoz Roglic celebrates after winning stage 19
Primoz Roglic celebrates after winning stage 19

With two strong time trialists ahead of him - Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) in second at 2:05 back and Friday's stage victor Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) in third at 2:24 back - Froome seemed to sense a podium spot is out of reach.

"Obviously having "Froomey" at my disposal so to speak is phenomenal", Thomas said. I regret that people doubt my performance as I know I'm not the best in the mountains but I work hard to make sure I get through them.

"I want to thank you for this", Demare said.

Martin finished in the same time as Thomas but missed out a time bonus himself with Romain Bardet edging out the Irish cyclist for third place.

Earlier, Tour de France leader Thomas lashed out after falling victim to an "idiot" fan who nearly brought him down at the end of Thursday's 17th stage. I'm not bothered about Tom Dumoulin or Chris Froome. But such estimates are essentially guesstimates at this stage, failing to factor in fatigue at the end of a Grand Tour and the additional motivation that comes with a scrap for yellow - compared to previous time trials where such prizes were not on the line for Thomas.

The stage started with an 18-rider break which then became 12 by the time it reached the Col de Tourmalet where the stage came alive.

Froome, who was wearing a large grey coat over his white Team Sky kit as he made his descent alongside his bodyguard, shouted "f**k you" at the officer, who appeared unapologetic.
