Six women have accused CBS chairman Les Moonves of sexual harassment, in a new report published by The New Yorker.

One of the accusers is actress Illeana Douglas (Six Feet Under), who reportedly alleges she was sacked from a 1997 pilot after refusing Moonves' advances which included "violent kissing" and holding her down on his office couch. Here's what you should know about Moonves and his career.

For a decade under his leadership, CBS has been the most-watched network in the USA, narrowly retaining its crown ahead of NBC in the 2017-18 season. "What it feels like to have someone hold you down-you can't breathe, you can't move", she said.

In a statement, CBS said: "All allegations of personal misconduct are to be taken seriously".

The New Yorker said 30 current or former employees complained that such behavior extended from Moonves to other parts of the corporation, including CBS News and its flagship investigative program 60 Minutes.

He began his Hollywood career as an actor with bit parts in TV shows before switching careers, quickly ascending in corporate management at 21st Century Fox Television, Lorimar and Warner Bros.

CBS did not directly address the allegations against Fager, but took issue with the depiction of the company as a whole.

After the article was published, the 68-year-old executive released the following statement where he apologizes for possibly making "some women uncomfortable by making advances".

CBS, though, did take a moment to praise Moonves for his work at CBS and put out the theory that the report was actually the product of a power struggle within the company.

CBS announced it had launched an investigation into the allegations by six women who said Moonves sexually harassed them between the 1980s and late 2000s. Moonves resisted that deal because he believed CBS's prospects were better without taking on Viacom's turnaround challenges.

Mr Moonves, who is chairman and chief executive of CBS, has yet to respond to BBC requests for comment.

The CBS board's statement noted the timing of the New Yorker article and said that the company's managers continued to have the board's support.

That made him one of the highest-paid CEOs in the country a year ago, according to an Equilar review of S&P 500 companies. But he said: "Those were mistakes, and I regret them immensely". It's unclear what impact Farrow's investigation into Moonves and CBS will have on the negotiations, but it's probably not good. CNN has not independently confirmed the allegations. It pits Moonves against Shari Redstone, who controls a majority of the voting shares in both CBS and Viacom... In its statement Friday, the CBS board said that it will "continue to focus on creating value for our shareowners". Before that, he headed CBS Entertainment an CBS Television.
