  • Reports: Rangers Trading Cole Hamels To Cubs

Hamels carried a 3.61 ERA at the end of June, before a rough July (1-3, 11.12 ERA) sent his ERA climbing and his price dropping.

The Cubs haven't had the best of luck with high-profile free-agent signing Yu Darvish this offseason, but they could get a steal in his former teammate, Hamels, should they fix the kink in his form.

Hamels has been with Texas since 2015. The Rangers will pick up $5 million of what's left on Hamels' $22.5 million salary for this year plus the $6 million buyout on his 2019 option.

The 34-year-old pitcher had been tied to the Cubs in trade talks recently, so this outcome is not surprising. The Cubs, however, don't appear to be discussing the possibility of taking on all of that almost $14MM commitment. He is 1-7 with a 6.41 ERA and an opponents' OPS of.911 at the Rangers' hitter-friendly Globe Life Park - and has an extensive postseason pedigree. "We certainly know that", said Rangers general manager Jon Daniels, adding that the Cubs were one of four teams he had serious discussions about Hamels with on Thursday. He's given up 16 home runs over 59 innings at home and 7 home runs over 55 1/3 innings on the road. He has pitched some really big games against teams I have been involved with.

He has given up 23 homers in 20 starts and has thrown fewer than 100 pitches in eight of his last 10. He is a great competitor and has great stuff.

The Cubs are on top of the NL with a 60-42 record entering Friday night's game at St. Louis, but they haven't received much length from their starting pitching. He was activated from the 60-day disabled list Tuesday after being sidelined by a right groin strain.
