Donald Trump Willing to Meet with Iranian Leaders - Without Preconditions

31 July, 2018, 23:28 | Author: Rachel Logan

Mr Trump said last night that he would meet the Iranian leadership "any time they want to" and regardless of whether it would agree to stricter curbs on its nuclear programme.

The Iranian government was responding to a comment by Mr Trump on Monday that he would be prepared to sit down with Iranian leaders without preconditions "anytime they want".

"I think there are no conditions for such a discussion at all", he added, according to the Times.

"The Islamic Republic has never sought tension in the region and does not want any trouble in global waterways, but it will never easily give up on its right to export oil", Rouhani said.

Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, who heads the parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy, suggested a United States return to the nuclear deal would be needed before Tehran could think of negotiating, while Kamal Kharrazi, the head of Iran's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, said Trump's offer was worthless.

"I would meet with Iran if they wanted to meet".

"I will meet with anybody", Trump said, touting his previous two summits while bashing the coverage from the "fake news". "If we could work something out that's meaningful, not the waste of paper that the other deal was, I would certainly be willing to meet", he continued.

He appeared to reject the idea by listing conditions that Iran would have to meet first.

Mr Qasemi criticised the U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear deal and economic sanctions that follow, noting "there are no conditions for such a discussion at all".

The US President shocked the world earlier this month with an all-caps threat to the Iranian regime on Twitter. Iran had showed its openness to dialogue in the past, particularly with the phone call between Rouhani and Trump's predecessor Barack Obama in 2013.

There was no immediate confirmation from the Trump administration.

Washington is preparing to re-impose sanctions on Tehran within days - despite objections from the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany, which also signed the 2015 agreement. The other was that Iran's ballistic missile development was not covered under the agreement. I ended the Iran deal.

One possible opportunity for the two leaders to meet would be during the United Nations General Assembly in late September.

Washington aims to force Tehran to end its nuclear program and its support of militant groups in the Middle East, where Iran is involved in proxy wars from Yemen to Syria.

Kamal Kharazi, the head of Iran's Strategic Council of Foreign, said there was "no value in Trump's proposal" given Iran's "bad experiences in negotiations with America" and "US officials' violations of their commitments". Cessation of threats to worldwide shipping was also on the list.
