  • Elections agency says Imran Khan won Pakistan's election, but needs a coalition

On Monday, PM Modi called Imran Khan to congratulate him on his party's victory in the general elections in Pakistan and hoped that "Pakistan and India will work to open a new chapter in bilateral ties".

In a nation obsessed with cricket, Khan cleverly leveraged his star status to transition into a career in politics, founding the PTI, otherwise known as the Justice Party, in 1996.

Besides these three major parties, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal Pakistan won 13 seats, Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan six seats, Pakistan Muslim League and Balochistan Awami Party four seats each, Balochistan National Party and Grand Democratic Alliance two seats each, Awami Muslim League Pakistan, Awami National Party, Jamhoori Wattan Party and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaniat one seat each.

He also said that a possible venue for the oath-taking ceremony could be D-Chowk - a very important junction in Islamabad, leading up to the Presidency, the Prime Minister's House, the Supreme Court of Pakistan, and the Parliament.

Khan, who is the only cricketer from Pakistan to have led his country to win the cricket World Cup in 1992 and defeat India in a Test series in India (1896-87), has already revealed his pro-peace stance.

"Pakistan ke saath taaluqaat mein naye daur ka aaghaaz par taiyaar hain - Bharatiya vazeer e azam (We are ready for the beginning of a new era in relations with Pakistan - Indian prime minister)", said the PTI press note.

Khan's media team said he had told Modi it was vital both countries focus on pulling millions out of poverty.

The PTI leader also said that the PTI is in talks with various political parties for support to form the government in the capitaland in Punjab.

"We all look forward to having an honest leader and we hope that Imran Khan will be that honest leader", said Dr Nighat.

Spokesperson for Khan's party Fawad Chaudhry also did not rule out inviting Modi to the swearing-in ceremony. "The solution to conflicts should be found through dialogue", he was quoted as telling Modi.

"Wars and bloodshed instead of resolving disputes lead to tragedies", Khan is reported to have said.

It said the views expressed by Khan during his speech about Pakistan's future ties with its neighbours and global powers were "sensible and aspirational". The attack on Pathankot airbase in January 2016 and the Pakistan terror strike on Uri killing 17 Indian soldiers have deeply hurt India and Indian Army.

He was a fierce critic of the USA war on terror, particularly the country's use of drone strikes in Pakistan, which targeted terrorist networks but also killed Pakistani civilians.
