President Trump tweeted a thank-you to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un early Thursday for "keeping your word" on the repatriation process of remains of victims from the Korean war.

The White House says President Donald Trump has received a letter from North Korea's Kim Jong Un, following up on the two leaders' June summit in Singapore.

"The ongoing correspondence between the two leaders is aimed at following up on their meeting in Singapore and advancing the commitments made in the U.S. -DPRK joint statement", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

"A letter to President Trump from Chairman Kim was received on August 1".

His comments came hours after Vice President Mike Pence presided over a ceremony in the state of Hawaii marking the repatriation of the 55 sets of remains to US soil.

Trump's conciliatory tone stands in stark contrast to his rhetoric just previous year, when he referred to the North Korean leader as a "little rocket man" in response to Pyongyang's recent ballistic missile tests.

The United States said during a solemn ceremony on Wednesday the human remains presumably included Americans killed in the Korean War and thanked North Korea for making good on its pledge to hand them over. Senior Trump administration officials have urged patience, cautioning that the process of denuclearizing North Korea and removing the threat of its long-range missiles will take time.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, which keeps a record of missing American soldiers, announced Elmore's identification on July 3.

Harris, who held a news conference for local media on Thursday at the US ambassador's residence, is making his views known only a few weeks after arriving in South Korea.

Experts say positively identifying the decades-old remains could take anywhere from days to decades.

Trump has sought to show progress from his June 12 summit with Kim in Singapore.

But it is not clear if those remains have been repatriated as well.
