  • Ashwin is the second fastest cricketer to 200 Test wickets

Virat Kohli's hundred in the first Test against England provides just the kind of inspiration that a struggling Indian batting line-up needed, feels Chris Gayle.

That left India with a potentially awkward chase.

England did not have to wait long for their first breakthroughs as Broad (2/29) trapped Vijay and had Shikhar Dhawan (13) caught behind. The right-handed batsman couldn't handle a delivery from Ishant Sharma, who picked his fourth wicket.

KL Rahul (13) did not look too comfortable and was removed by Ben Stokes (1/25).

India have taken control of the first Test against England by reducing the hosts to 6-86 in their second innings on day three, with Ishant Sharma taking two wickets in the final over before lunch.

But Kohli (149) was an unstoppable force - after two dropped chances - as he banished memories of his miserable maiden Test tour to this country four years ago - when he averaged 13.4, with a top-score of 39 - as he compiled his 22nd Test century in an India total of 274 which contained no other innings above 26.

England's 1,000th Test had threatened to end in an embarrassing defeat with more than two days remaining as they collapsed to 87 for seven in their second innings.

Earlier, all rounder Sam Curran followed up his first innings haul of four wickets by scoring a solid half century to guide England to 180 all out in their second innings.

Afterwards, 20-year-old Curran and Adil Rashid (16) tried their best in a 48-run stand for the eighth wicket.

"I had goosebumps listening to the Barmy Army chants and that first hour tomorrow (Saturday) is going to be crucial", Curran told Sky Sports. He broke the budding 21-run partnership between him and Dawid Malan (20) as Rahul held another excellent, low catch at leg slip.

Following scans on Thursday, England have confirmed Jos Buttler did not suffer a fractured finger in the morning session. They added 32 runs for the unbeaten sixth wicket, playing with maturity. India saw a couple of edges not getting into the hands of the fielders.

He was eventually last man out on the stroke of tea, caught behind off Umesh Yadav.
