  • Ohio to have a sales-tax holiday

In anctipation of the crowds, Cottonwood Mall has added hours to its weekend schedule, staying open until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday.

You wonder whether North Carolina will have its own tax-free holiday weekend? School supplies, computers and clothing, to name a few things!

The Exchange tried to contact the Laurinburg Walmart to see if there is a dip in sales during the tax-free weekend due to people traveling to SC but there was no word back.

Walmart is one of several retailers trying to make it easier for shoppers by having school supply lists available online and in the stores. Unlike a year ago, however, the sales tax doesn't apply to computers.

The tax exemption applies to parents' back-to-school shopping for their kids, and for teachers stocking their classrooms.

The sales tax holiday runs through Sunday, August 5, and all retailers in the state are required to participate. During those three days, shoppers will not have to pay sales taxes on clothes costing less than $75 per item and school supplies costing $20 per item.

Democrats have decried the holiday as an election-year gimmick.

English also explained that by shopping local the sales bump up sales tax, which brings in even more businesses to the area.

The restriction includes accessories like mouth guards and gloves, as well as cleated or spiked athletic shoes.

The August tax holiday, enacted in 2005, costs the state about $3.3 million, according to August 2017 data from the Taxation and Revenue Department.
