In the state Department of Health's latest weekly update, it was noted that human cases of the West Nile virus have shown up in Brown (2), Buffalo, Day, Edmunds, Hanson, Hughes, Lincoln, Minnehaha and Spink counties.

In rare cases, West Nile virus can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord). The disease, which has infected more than 150 people in the past six years, is on track to pose an unusually higher than normal risk this year and is widespread throughout the commonwealth, having already been found in 51 Pennsylvania Counties as of August 1, 2018.

"We are very concerned by the amount of West Nile virus we are seeing at this point in the summer season, and we urge the people of CT to take the threat posed by mosquitoes that carry the virus seriously", Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Raul Pino said. There are no medications to treat or vaccines to prevent West Nile Virus.

The health department said there has been a large increase of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus across the county, which is happening earlier this summer compared to prior years. "It takes only a small amount of standing water, in a bird bath, in an old auto tire, in overturned lids, in empty pots, anywhere, to provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes".

Seventeen people died due to the Nipah virus in Kerala, out of which 16 cases were confirmed in lab. About 20% of people develop fever, headache, vomiting or a rash. "It takes only a small amount of standing water - in a bird bath, in an old vehicle tire, in overturned lids, in empty pots, anywhere - to provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes". Bird baths, clogged gutters and kiddie pools are common breeding sites.

"Basically, that means those mosquitoes are out there and this is the time to be the most cautious", said Parks and Recreation Director Ron Klock.

"It doesn't take much for several hundred mosquitoes to be born".
