Scattered protests in Iran as USA sanctions loom

Worldwide sanctions were lifted under the pact between world powers and Tehran in return for curbs on Iran's nuclear programme.

Central bank governor Abdolnaser Hemmati said the plan reflected Iran's self-confidence in the face of the looming us sanctions.

Trump in May pulled the U.S. out of the 2015 accord reached between Iran and world powers meant to curb Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Key Trump administration figures, including national security advisor John Bolton, have called for regime change in the past, although the official line is that Washington only wants a change in its "behaviour".

US President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 deal in May and ordered US sanctions on Tehran.

Already facing broad economic fallout as their currency implodes, Iranians are wondering how the next phase of the crisis in US relations will play out - and what, exactly, America's long-term strategy is toward their country.

CBS reported that Iranians have held protests across the country ahead of the new sanctions and as the nation's currency plummets, blaming Iran's leaders for the economic situation.

With a public outcry and heavy sanctions looming, there is no clear sign of a plan from the clerical regime to tackle these issues, to come up with a project or a proposal to ease the internal and global pressure, or make any changes in their behavior.

Sanctions will also be reapplied to USA imports of Iranian carpets and foodstuffs and on certain related financial transactions.

"Today we are at a very critical point in history regarding the nuclear deal, and Europe's transparent measures to compensate for the US' unlawful withdrawal from it are very important for the Iranian nation", Rouhani said after talks with new British Ambassador Rob Macaire.

Iran's oil exports could fall by as much as two-thirds by the end of the year because of the USA sanctions, putting oil markets under strain amid supply outages elsewhere in the world.

Speaking to reporters aboard his plane on his way home from Asia, Pompeo says Monday's re-imposition of sanctions is an important pillar in USA policy toward Iran. It will also face crippling restrictions by USA financial authorities on its ability to buy gold and other precious metals, be prevented from selling Iranian debt, and banned from trading industrial metals.

Donald Trump told Iran's President to "never, ever threaten the United States again". Authorities said by early evening, all protesters had dispersed.

The president also issued an all-caps threat to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani last month, warning him not to threaten the US or "YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE".
