Trump Jr.: Meeting was a 'bait and switch'

President Donald Trump defended his eldest son in a Sunday morning tweet, insisting that the infamous June 2016 meeting that Donald Trump Jr. took with a Russian attorney at Trump Tower to get "dirt" on Hillary Clinton was "totally legal".

"This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere", said Trump.

He concludes the tweet by saying, "I did not know about it!"

Trump's admission that his son's 2016 Russian meeting was to get information on Clinton runs counter to the narrative he has previously pushed about the meeting.

At the time, Mr Trump offered a similar comment to the one he made on Sunday, dismissing the meeting with the Russian lawyer promising dirt on his political opponent as no big deal. They described the statement, which had not mentioned that the Russian lawyer was expected to bring damaging information about Clinton, as "short but accurate".

Quickly, though, that explanation fell apart, and we learned that Trump Jr had actually been promised harmful information about Democrats, including Hillary Clinton.

After appearing to contradict his original story about the Trump Tower meeting, President Donald Trump has reportedly gotten some blunt advice from his top advisers - just stop talking about it.

Jay Sekulow said the president's the legal team is still having ongoing discussions about whether an interview should take place, but he added the president may or may not take his attorneys' advice.

While Trump's public stance on the reason for the meeting has evolved since it was first reported past year, so too has his admission of involvement in crafting a statement on behalf of his son that explained this meeting, the report noted.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied allegations by USA intelligence agencies that his government meddled and Trump denies collusion, describing the Mueller investigation as a political witch hunt that should be shut down.

Trump unleashed particular fury at reports that he was anxious about the Trump Tower meeting attended by Trump Jr. and other senior campaign officials.

Mirengoff explained that the Times is confusing the objective of the meeting - for Trump, getting the information about Clinton - with the focus of the meeting - "what the participants actually talked about".

The charges and countercharges have significantly muddied the waters of the Russia probe despite U.S. intelligence agencies having substantially confirmed that Moscow had puts its finger on the scale to help Trump win the 2016 elections, something Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to publicly confirm in Helsinki with Trump standing next to him.

"That happens when you have cases like this". They cited multiple unnamed sources.

"There is a moron on Fox claiming I chain smoke cigarettes worrying about the President's tweets".

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo vowed Sunday that the United States would "enforce the sanctions" it is reimposing against Iran after Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear pact. Sekulow asked on ABC News' "This Week," implying no laws prohibit campaign aides from meeting with foreign agents.

KEITH: Well, lots of things cause heartburn for President Trump's lawyers.

President Trump denies any collusion. I mean, they're calling it worse than contradictions obviously, ' she said.

Despite a show of force from his national security team this week as a warning against future Russian election meddling, Trump again deemed the matter a "hoax" this week.

So today's breathless headlines are, as the Powerline blog's Paul Mirengoff called them, "fake news".
