Oscars 2020 Airdate Announced and Changes Teased by AMPAS

The Oscars are adding a new category to honour popular films and promising a brisk three-hour ceremony on a much earlier air date of February 9, 2020.
"We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world", president John Bailey and CEO Dawn Hudson wrote in an email sent to Academy members. Now the Oscars will take a page from the Tony Awards playbook by announcing some of the categories during commercial breaks.
The biggest change is the announcement of a new category, which is being designed around "achievement in popular film".
Additionally, the 2020 Academy Awards will have an earlier date, moving from February 23 to February 9.
The Academy has recently made much-lauded moves to diversify and expand its membership, which would theoretically lead to a corresponding diversification and expansion of the kind of films that get nominated for, and awarded, Oscars. The annual awards show usually runs over three hours, with the longest show clocking in at four hours and 20 minutes minutes in 2002. But the academy didn't specify what films would be categorized as "popular" or when this change would take effect. While the details of this new category have not been disclosed yet, it's safe to assume that nominees will be films that managed to please not only critics, but audiences as well. Certain categories - which have yet to be announced but will presumably include those honoring technical achievement - will be presented during commercial breaks.
We are excited about these steps, and look forward to sharing more details with you.
