Seagal was granted Russian citizenship in 2016 and has vehemently defended President Vladimir Putin's policies, including Moscow's 2014 annexation of Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula, along with criticizing the US government. The actor has been a very public supporter of Putin, going on television to defend the Russian president over accusations of meddling in the 2016 United States elections.

Russian Foreign Ministry wrote on Facebook earlier that "Steven Seagal was appointed as the Russian foreign ministry's special representative for Russian-US humanitarian ties".

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday that it had appointed the action star as a "special representative" for Russian-American humanitarian relations.

"I hope we can strive for peace, harmony and positive results in the world".

The once-prolific actor has been recruited to deepen ties with the U.S.in the humanitarian field, assisting "cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges", according to Russia's foreign ministry. "I take this honour very seriously". The actor attended Putin's recent swearing-in ceremony in May.

The Russian ministry said he would not be paid for his envoy role.

The actor, who was granted Russian citizenship in 2016, has robustly defended the Russian leader's policies, including Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea, and has criticised the U.S. government.

He has previously hung out with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a fellow martial arts fan.

It's not the first time Russian Federation has tried to give Seagal some sort of semi-official status. While that may seem, let's say, confusing, it's not a complete shock if you've kept track of Seagal and his russophilia in the last few years.

"And this kind of propaganda is really a diversion ... so that the people in the United States of America won't really see what's happening", Seagal continued, praising Putin as "a great world leader" and "brilliant tactician".
