Melania parents become US citizens using 'chain migration' Donald Trump denounces

  • Melania Trump's parents sworn in as US citizens report

Melania Trump - who has been vacationing with her husband U.S. President Donald Trump in Bedminster, N.J. - did not accompany her parents.

First lady Melania Trump's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, became US citizens on Thursday, taking advantage of a program that President Trump has long railed against.

Wildes wouldn't comment on how the Knavs received their green cards or citizenship Thursday, but criticized the Trump administration's immigration policies to CNN. "I've been a very staunch advocate against the president's policies myself as an immigration lawyer", Wildes said.

The president often rails against family-based immigration at his rallies, and has called it a pathway for terrorists to enter the country.

In November, he had tweeted, "CHAIN MIGRATION must end now!" I've had the privilege of coming to this building for more than 30 years working with some of the finest families and individuals [.] This golden experiment, these doors that are in America, remain hinged open to handsome people as they have today.

Melania changed her name to Knauss when she began modeling. It's unclear when the Knavses obtained permanent residency in the US, the Times reports, but Wildes said they met the five year requirement.

They came and went from the ceremony at a Manhattan federal building flanked by Homeland Security police. But the Knavses' lawyer said their ceremony was kept private for "security reasons". They had been living in the U.S.as permanent residents. She became a United States citizen in 2006.

Thomas Cioppa, New York district director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, presided over the 20-minute ceremony, Wildes said. Citizenship for Melania Trump's parents have set tongues wagging.

The couple met in Sevnica, Slovenia in 1966, and Melania was born in the same town.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs listen as their attorney makes a statement in New York, Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018.

The First Lady became a USA citizen in 2006, after she entered the United States in 2001 on a coveted Einstein visa for people with "extraordinary ability" when she was working as a model.

William White, a 74-year-old actor, said, with his eyebrows raised, "I'm happy for them".

She settled in NY in 1996 and met Trump two years later. Now, we're certain his shameless hypocrisy sees no boundaries.
