He is now at his New Jersey golf club. She commended the response effort for its "swift action" and public safety protection.

Video taken by a bystander showed the passenger airplane making an unlikely upside-down loop, then flying low over Puget Sound before crashing into the sparsely populated Ketron Island in the northwestern USA state of Washington.

Fire crews were working on putting out the fire from the crash on Ketron Island in Puget Sound.

Two military F-15s were scrambled to chase the stolen plane, but "were not involved in the crash", local officials said.

Operations at Sea-Tac airport, the largest commercial airpot in the Pacific Northwest, were temporarily halted during the incident, but resumed after the hijacking came to its tragic end.

Authorities initially said the man was a mechanic but Alaska Airlines later said he was an employee who helps direct aircraft to gates and de-ice planes.

The stolen plane was a twin engine turboprop Q400 airplane belonging to its sister carrier Horizon Air, Alaska Airlines said on Twitter.

But in the chilling audio recording from the cockpit, the pilot told the air traffic controller that he was "just a broken guy", and said he couldn't land over fears he would be imprisoned. An air traffic controller called him "Rich", and tried to convince him to land the airplane.

In one instance, Rich told ATC: "This is probably jail time for life, huh?"

The man added: "I'm not ready to bring it down yet but holy smokes I need to stop looking at the fuel because it's going down quick".

Later the man said: "I've got a lot of people that care about me".

The 29-year-old mechanic who stole a plane from a Seattle airport before crashing it into the ground was recorded telling air traffic controllers that he is "just a broken guy".

A "suicidal" mechanic stole an empty passenger plane from the Seattle-Tacoma airport late Friday, took it for a brief flight that included an aerial loop, then crashed it, in an incident officials said was unrelated to terrorism. There were no passengers aboard.

"An airline employee conducted an unauthorized takeoff without passengers at Sea-Tac", the tweet read, "aircraft has crashed in south Puget Sound". Military jets were scrambled from Portland, but it does not appear that these jets were involved in the crash of the Horizon aircraft.

Pastor said the man "did something foolish and may well have paid with his life".

"Was doing stunts in air or lack of flying skills caused crash into Island", the sheriff's department tweeted. Petty Officer Ali Flockerzi said a 45-foot vessel was headed to the scene.

Alaska Airlines believes a ground service agent employed by Horizon Air was the individual responsible for flying the Horizon Q400 without clearance from Sea-Tac International Airport around 8 p.m. tonight.

No other information was immediately available.
